take out the instrument housing

Featured Replies

how can I take out the instrument housing to replace the lumps .

thanks

Hi,

Remove blank panel on the right of the dash surround- there's a screw there.

Remove blank at the left of where the fog light switch(es) are - there's a screw there.

On the main bank of switches under the airvent, remove the blanks at either end - one screw under each.

Remove the panel round the centre airvent thumbwheel - there's a screw there

Total 5 cross-head screws.

Grab the black surround where you can and wiggle it out. You should be able to het fingers to the back of the switches to unplug them (they are usually colour coded for when it all goes back together.) As the instrument cluster appears, there'll be two metal clips, undo those and the black surround will come free. At the back of the cluster are three electrical connections (left, right and centre) each with squeeze and remove connector, plus the speedo cable (squeeze and remove). You chould now have the cluster in your hands. Couple of screws hold the black plastic cover on at the back, then all the lights are on twist-out connectors.

Fitting is doing it all backwards. If you have small hands, you might be able to fit the speedo easily. However, I find it easier to pop the bonnet, undo the speedo from the gearbox (big knurled nut thingy), pull a bit of cable through the dash, fit the cable and the connectors and then refit to big black surround etcetc (Don't forget to put the cable back onto the gearbox)

Takeout should be around 10 minutes if you're taking it easy ;-)

Hope this helps :-)

thank u so much , and really this need small hand ))) but every this is ok , really thanks . i want ask u which lamp i should use because i find 2 colour of lamps , 12v/2w and 12v/1.2w , but i put all 12v/1.2w . is this right or i can have problem after ?

I have to admit I don't know off-hand. I have a spare cluster here that I used a like-for-like when a bulb blew. In theory there should be no loading problem as you've used lower rated bulbs. However, the lower rating will mean the 1.2w will give off less light than 2w, so the illumination will be less. I don't think cluster illumination is part of any test beyond 'clearly readable' so I don't think it would be a problem.
