4x4 Required. Scout Or Not to Scout? ? ?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Little background, im an Operations Manager for a large renewable energy company (Wind Farms) .

Last year i bought a LR Freelander 2 GS. Great car, and last year, i could deal with the 35mpg average.

Now in the current climate of fuel prices, im finding it hard to justify keeping it.

I have done 32k in the Freelander this year, been great, no probs.

I do mainly motoway miles, but due to the location of most windfarms, theres always that little bit at the end of my journey which requires me to have a 4x4.

This isnt extreme off roading, mainly forestry tracks.

I have now whittled my choice down to a Skoda, either a Scout, or just a Octy 4x4.

Im losing a little on the ride height if i go for the 4x4, but i can live with that for the mpg it will return.

Im after advice, if you have any. To go the extra few k and get a scout. Or save a few k, and get a normal 4x4.

dont want to go over the 10k mark really.

Hi,

I think you either require the diesel scout or a good accountant. A good accountant will get you back over 0.40p per mile on fuel if your company have you forking out for it(just call your local tax office to confirm, you will be surprised, it's easy). The diesel scout is excellent however I have ordered the 1.8 petrol scout for personal use as my wife hates the noise of the diesel? and she doesn't have to worry about fuel bills.

Regards scousescout

Hi and welcome aboard.

The diesel 4x4 is great and more than capable of a bit of off-roading. What I would make sure of though is the current spec of the underside of the car. Our 2007 2.0 TDi 4x4 has a proper sumpguard and some other anti-snagging underbody protection but I think the petrols don't and what looks like decent protection on the Scout isn't necessarily as sturdy as it could be.
