High revs and poor MPG 1.9 TDI

Featured Replies

Just recently my 52 plate Octavia estate (341000 miles as a taxi) has started revving to about 1100/1200 rpm at tickover intermitantly. It also appears that it is revving higher when driving too as it can sometimes be difficult to keep to a constant speed on a flat road. The fuel consumption has gone down to about 38/40 mpg instead of my regular 46+. At it's recent MOT the emissions were very high and it only passed because my friendly tester 'forced' it to. My initial thoughts are perhaps a dirty EGR valve. Has anyone else got previous experience of this happening?

Maybe EGR but unlikely I would have thought, but possibly MAF or CTS.

Got any fault codes? How is your oil consumption?

CTS??

No fault codes and oil consumption is about the same as it's always been

CTS = coolant temperature sensor. It has a double output, one for the dash gauge and one for the ECU. Sometimes they can go faulty and report dubious temps on one side.

I assume it has a new airfilter? Try running without the MAF connected and see if it the idle is any better (might drive a bit slower).

Or maybe there is an issue with your throttle pedal sensor...

Have tried it with MAF disconnected in the past. All it appeared to do was stop the turbo from working but will try it again. CTS should be cheap enough to experiment with so I'll give that a try too. Thanks for the input

Get a genuine VAG CTS, ebay ones don't usually work for long.

Thats got to be the highest milage octy around! and i thought one of mine was high at 192,000!

Hahahaha it's still just a baby. We've got 2 in our fleet at over 600,000. The highest ever was a VW Transporter T4 which did 1.1 million before it went to the garage in the sky due to everything but the engine failing

I've seen one with 458k on it!

I would put money on the CTS, exactly the same symptoms as my car, when I scanned it with VCDS it threw up a fault with the sensor.

Clucking bell!

Changing it tomorrow. Hopefully that will be the cure.
