my car has developed a knocking noise over night it sounds like its coming from the gear stick area it only happen on start up when im driving i cant get it to happen

heat shield on the exhaust maybe?

From your description I can't decide if it occurs at idle, or only for a few seconds when you start the car.

What sort of knocking, as in what does the it sound like?

its just on start up its more of a knock

Lower engine mounting possibly

Could be a broken exhaust hanger. When this happens, you often only hear the 'knocking' sound whilst you are cranking the engine.
