Vlingo on Android

Featured Replies

I discovered Vlingo a voice command app for my HTC Desire (also available on other platforms), which allows you to send SMS messages, dial people in your phone book, update Facebook and Twitter all using voice commands. It also reads SMS and emails using an inCar mode.

I thought this was fantastic whilst driving. I could use my BT headset and then using voice command dial people without having to stop or risk looking down at the phone.

The only downside to it was that if I disconnected the BT headset before turning Vlingo off, it often reset the phone. This I could live with as it was a common problem, well reported, and the developers were aware of this and working on a fix.

However, the other night I was driving along and the battery in my BT headset died and so Vlingo reset my phone, not a problem after a few mins the phone will come back on.. only it didn't.. the screen remained black for the rest of my journey..

After I got home I had to reset the phone by taking the battery out, but when it came back on it could only mount the 16GB SD card as Read Only..

I checked the SD card in my laptop and it had become corrupted - all the music, photo's, everything were gone. To make matters worse, the card would not format - it would get to around 80% and then fail with an error that the card could not be formatted. I couldn't even format the card in another phone or in the HTC.

I have sent a message to the Vlingo developers and am awaiting a response.

If you are using this app - and it has reset your phone before, please be careful.. or back up your SD card regularly and have a spare one.. just in case.

Buggar! That is pretty annoying!

Used it for a very short time but found it a bit rubbish tbh so sacked it off.

Just be thankful that it's an easily replaceable sd card that's corrupted and not built in flash! I got my 16GB Kinston card for less than £20 so not the end of the world... would be nice to see some kind of a decent response at least from the developers of vlingo too.

Let us know what they say.

Can we use 16gb cards in our Desires?! :o

it could just be a duff memory card, especially if it was purchased on ebay.

Did you format the card after you got it, or simply just use it out of the box.

If bought from ebay cheaply, and you did not format it when received then the card could be a fake. The card will never format as its capacity is not 16GB at all, and most likely 1 or 2GB at the most. The cards firmware would be hacked to present 16GB to the OS. Create a 2GB partition on the card and try to format that and I bet it formats that fine.

The SD has worked fine for months with no issues, nope it wasn't an Ebay special - if I recall I picked it up from Amazon and it's SanDisk..

I have contacted SanDisk and they have agreed to exchange it as it's within warranty.

Yes - I should have backed up my photo's. But I think Vlingo should have also responded to my communications - still no word from them. No even an apology.

Yep. Desire supports SD HC (SD 2.0). So I think you should be OK up to 32Gb emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Shame they aren't cheaper

Not exactly expensive either!

I got my Kingston class 4 (performs as fast as a class 6) 16gb card for just under £20.

Even the likes of play.com have some good deals:

Now you see - there is a classic example of Windows 7 clipboard failure (that's my excuse anyway).

This one

Off topic but 16gb class 10 pny for £18 @ play.com, preordered mine for my DHD (finally can start to watch films on this).
