1996 1.3 Felicia Thermostat problem

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I have a 1996 P reg Skoda Felicia GLXI with the 1.3 engine in it which i picked up for a cheap run about.

First things first, I am a little bit of a novice, but trying to pick up how to do things myself. Anyway.

Ever since I've had the car, since december, the temperature has only ever registered if sitting in traffic for a long time, and the heaters have not blown very warm, when it was really cold. I've put this down to the thermostat needing to be replaced. Looking at previous posts, it looks like I have the old style thermostat housing, although everything appears to be intact even the C clip.

Anyway, I ordered a replacement sensor off of ebay here. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130493319271&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

It seems to be a different shape to the old one (the old one is spade shaped), and it doesn't seem to sit properly in the housing to allow for the C clip to go over it and hold it tight.

I don't really want to have to replace the whole housing, as I don't really want to spend any money on this car.

Do I need to order a different stat? Or is it a case of having to replace the whole housing?

Thanks in advance.

You ordered the wrong sensor I'm afraid. That is for the MPi engine as fitted to later Felicias. You own a Felicia phase 1 by the sounds(100 years sticker on the wings?). That is also the one for the 1.6 engine. All Phase 2 GLX mk1s were 1.6 only, so you have what I used to own. The dead giveaway on the engine is on top, the MPi powerplants have 1.3 MPi in big letters, and have a square air filter in the bottom right of the engine bay, and and often a strut brace.

Give Jorily a ring and they will put you right.

Ah excellent.

Yes it's definately the non-MPi version. Damn it! hehe.

Ok I'll see what Jorily can do.

Thanks for your help.

No problem. That's what the forum is here for. Yours is basically the Favorit engine, complete with distributor. The later has a coil pack instead amongst other changes.

if they won't take it back i'll gladly have it off you i need to order one anyway and i have the mpi 1.3.

Ok, they have not gotten back to me.

Anyone know where I can get the right thermostat as I was hoping to do this sooner then later?

scrappage scheme survivor, I will PM you.

Thanks for all your help.

not gotten back to you?? well i never... no suprises there then, but to be fair at least you were lucky enough to recieve your item

anywho, are you after a thermostat or a temperature sensor?? the linked ebay page is for a sensor... tbh most decent motor factors local to you should keep parts like that

Hi, sorry for the long delay in replying.

I assumed the sensor that I was buying was the thermostat, correct me if I'm wrong?

Basically, the car will only reach 70deg and above if you're sat in traffic, and I assumed that that would make the car run not quite so efficiently, please do correct me if I'm wrong. Is that the part I need to replace? I assumed because it had 4 pins on it, it was the temperature sender / thermostat all in one.

Thanks

the temp sensor has 4 pins because it has 2 complete sensors inside the same unit, 1 for the guage, and 1 for the ecu.. and it is purely for measuring the temperature of the coolant

the thermostat is a mechanical component which restricts/allows coolant to flow through the radiator and hence regulates the temperature of the coolant
