Felicia Pick-up '88 diesel - power surge - yes really!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Great site btw having just found it and become a member!

I have a low mileage (30K) 1.9 diesel VW Caddy (same as Felicia as you all know) and it inconsistently has a power surge under gentle acceleration.

It happens when on a light or trailing throttle and appears to find a lot more power than normal for a few seconds before returning to normal, any ideas what this might be and what to try first? - occasionally the idle runs high guess this could be connected?

Thanks in anticipation,

Matt.

Does it have an oil consumption and/or puff blue smoke when you get the surging? I'm wondering about intake valve stem oil seals leaking.

egr valve... probably filthy dirty or completely siezed

my 1.9 felicia does the same, ever since i got it (about 7 yrs now).

sudden power surge, as if a turbo had kicked in, but of course it does not have one!

i`ve learned to live with it.

why would dirty egr valve do that??

Interesting then that we have the same symptons with someone on here! - yes exactly that as though it has a turbo, would actually be nice to get it to that frugal power all the time therefore was wondering if the egr valve can be cleaned at all or is it a sealed unit?

best bet is to take the valve off and make a metal gasket that does not have a hole in for the exhaust gas to pass thru, ie blank it off completly its not really needed for uk emmisions anyway and will result in a cleaner smoother engine

i did this on a mated diesel felly, i used a cut up coke can for the gasket

still working to this day

I was having this problem up until recently on my Pug. Different engine I know but similar design and workings really.

One disconnected EGR valve later and hey presto... no more surging!

Might blank it off though as under some circumstances I am still getting a little juddering and think the valve might be stuck open or closed slightly.

Phil

i like the idea of blanking it off!

gonna go get a can of coke to drink now, bye
