Tuning a PD130

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Need your help please

Now I dont own a skoda, but I know there are of course a lot of similarities in tuning options and output of power and there are a real good bunch of techies on here running silly power on their diesels, so hopefully you can help me :)

I run a 2001 Passat TDI 130. I am use to tuning, having run an old 2001 Seat leon cupra on a hybrid K03 and all the mods under the sun (263bhp and 282lbft)

So far on my passat I am running a straight through pipe 2 1/4" cat back system, and a straight through back box with a 3" tip, so no restriction from the cat back at all. Green panel filter with a CAI from the grill and a STG1 Revo map, and I have just purchased the EGR delete kit, so this is going on soon too.

I am getting a PD130 turbo in good condition which I am going to be sending to CR Turbo's as they did the work on my previous hybrid and did a great job on it, but this is where I become unstuck

A few questions:

Is a diesel turbo the same? I am presuming CRT would carry out the same work as they did on my K03, i.e. 360 degree thrust bearing, ported housing, enlargened inlet and compressor wheel etc, or is hybrid treatment for a diesel turbo completely different? (I can't imagine it is)

Once this is done the the 2.5" downpipe will be going on and the cat to be cut out.

Will I need to uprate the injectors? (I am told they are good for 220bhp)

What power can I expect? 200-210 maybe, with the map tweaked?

Car is running on a standard clutch so this will be upgraded to a stg2 at some point. It will also be running the standard intercooler (possibly upgrading to the Audi off road intercooler as this is a cheap upgrade and has the metal end tanks as opposed to the plastic ones on the passat standard unit)

thanks for your help guys and gals

Re fuelling, the nozzles in the PD130 (AWX?) engine do fuel marginally less than the ones found in the horizontally mounted versions, i.e ASZ and ARL engines. I would imagine 210hp on those injectors and a hybrid turbo is reasonable, but I would give the clutch about 48 hours at that power level :D and if no uprated intercooler, a lot of heatsoak issues as well.

Cheers mate. The car is not hammered so heat soak wont be too bad, but yet it is a weak point, especially in the summer. Never had this issue as I ran the PA kit on my Leon, which was bl00dy massive! :D

Obviously alot isnt applicable to a passat but some of it is

Thanks for that linky...pretty much everything I did to my Leon hybrid

Perhaps I should have phrased my original post better. Has anyone on here hybridised the pd130 turbo and what gains did they get from it with just a filter and exhaust? (I know I will need a clutch and SMF...but I will push this until it goes)

I have just got a quote back from CR Turbo's:

Stage 1 52mm compressor wheel

stage 2 56mm comp and cutback turbine blades.

Stage 1 is £545 plus carriage plus VAT

Stage 2 is £595 plus carriage plus VAT.

Both specs are fitted with uprated thrust bearing

The above seems quite expensive compared to when I hybridised my K03, so have asked if this is on a new unit or on an exchange basis (I am really hoping the price comes down for an exchange unit....)

My car has coilies, and I will be uprating the discs and standard pads to green ones

If I can push 210bhp and over 300lbft I will be happy.

This leads me onto my next question. How much torque can the standard head take? I heard it was good for 400lbft.....

A mate ran a pd130 for a year or so. Rated to 210bhp, made about 200bhp. Providing your not planning any santa pod trips a standard clutch should last at that power with a careful torque steady map.
