Well it had two cambelt changes within 10k of one another? So maybe it did have the pump done?

If not am I able to do the pump myself?

belt has to be removed to do the waterpump .. this is why they say do it together cos the pump with metal impel is only about £50 to buy and u will end up paying for all the labour again

But am I right in saying you only need a new water pump if it's the old plastic 1?

yes old one is plastic and can break apart, new vag fix is a metal impeller so if you have a metal one no need to change.
