Life Expectancy of Standard Exhaust

Featured Replies

What are your experiences of the above?

I've owned the vRS for just over five years from new and the exhaust still appears to be fine. I appreciate factors of: engine temperature, cat operation, moisture etc affect the life of an exhaust but as I'm planning on keeping the car for a while, if the exhaust goes, I'm pondering a standard one or a Milltek twin-pipe jobbie.

The one on mine is broadly-speaking OK ... there's a couple of small bits of light corrosion on the pipe, and around the welding seam on the box. I asked about it when I had my MOT done last year (first one with the car - tester let me have a look underneath when it was on the raised ramps), and the chap said that it was to be expected due to road salt spray, was absolutely normal for a car of that age (54 plate), and would be fine for a good few years yet.

Don't know if that's any help..?

My Polo is on it's original (2000, 85k) to the best of my knowledge. I asked the MoT chap about it, and he said the bracket holding the cat on it a bit lose, but otherwise fine.

When I priced up a standard VW exhuast (cat back) it was several hundred £ cheaper to get an aftermarket/custom one made up. Not sure if Skoda will be the same or not, but that alone would sway my opinion!

8 to 10 years in my experience, unless the vehicle does a lot of short trips as that usually ends up with more moisture sitting in the exhaust and rusting through quicker.

Mine's done 8 years (cat) and 8.5 and counting (cat back), living by the coast and not garaged since the car was 3.5 years old.

10 years and 126,000 milse so far and still OK...

A diesel exhaust lasts a lot longer than petrol car exhaust. Any unburnt fuel is basically oil (derv) and prevents the exhaust from rotting from the inside out.

200K on original exhaust.....outer skin is coming loose on the back box, but not blowing yet.... :-)

Mine is on 139k and I believe it's still the original exhaust

My 99 MY Octy was still on original at 11 years old.
