1.6TDi CR displayed gear change prompts and economy

Featured Replies

I have now had my car a week and have 150miles on the clock.

I joined this site while I was waiting for my car to be built and have followed various threads about economy, 1.6TDi CR v 1.2Tsi, 1.6TDi CR v 1.9TDi PD etc.

Specifically I noted the comments that the 1.6TDi CR has far less torque at low revs than the 1.9TDi PD. My previous car was an Audi A4 with the 1.9TDi PD 115PS engine.

Of course my engine is still tight and I am trying not to labour it nor hold at constant revs. Other than checking it works I have specifically not used the cruise control. I am try to keep under 2500rpm but mainly in 2nd I have had it briefly up towards 3000rpm a few times and a couple of times to just over 3000rpm. Also a couple of times I have forgotten and changed up too soon so just over 1000rpm but quickly changing down again.

The Fabia is higher geared as in 5th 2000rpm is displayed at 70mph compared to the Audi's 2250rpm.

The Audi was totally happy at well under 40mph in 5th where as the Fabia definitely needs to be in 4th until about 50mph and in 3rd below 40mph.

Maybe it will become a little happer under 1500rpm after a few thousand miles but various posts suggest it will always be happier and more economical kept above this speed.

I am totally ignoring the gear change indication as to me totally wrong.

At times, mainly around town in 3rd, with light throttle I am being prompted to change up at under 1700rpm and if I did the revs in 4th would be around 1250rpm.

It seems Skoda did not updated the software to suit the 1.6Tdi CR rather than the 1.9TDi PD.

Regarding economy I filled the car straight away as the dealer put just 5 litres in and it will be at least next weekend before I fill again so can calculate my mpg.

When I collected the car it had just 7 miles on the clock and on the display the average mpg was 25ish from the shunting around from production line to dealer. The displayed average mpg is rising daily and now 51.

I am driving a little more gently and keeping to 60-70mph rather than my typical 70-80mph. For my normal journey pattern the Audi computer gave an average of just over 51mpg compared to just under 50mpg on the occasions I calculated it.

Time will tell but if the Fabia's computer is not too far out once 5000 miles on the clock at least mid 50's mpg looks achievable even with slightly heavier right foot.

I have decided for now to use Shell regular diesel rather than my normal Tesco or ASDA as currently only 1p/litre more and I have a choice of two stations without going more than a couple of miles out my way.

Hi delta,

Congrats on getting your new car. It sounds as if you are pleased. If it helps, my sister bought one nearly 4 weeks ago and zeroing the trip each journey produces anywhere between 52 and 58 mpg. She is mostly on Suffolk country roads and dual carriageways. She is avoiding labouring the engine and is not using cruise just yet. Apart from that she is driving it fairly normally. So far she has just 400 miles or so on the clock and is very happy. She traded in an Octy 1.9PD estate and already the cr1.6 is proving much more economical on the trips she does but she is not worrying about the fuel economy as she knows it won't be as good as later on. Keep posting on this if you can. Enjoy your new car!

Hi delta925,I have the elegance crtdi 105bhp 1500 miles on her now and easy get 60mpg ,definate do ignore the gear change display!,use the force jedi change when she tells you not when the computer shouts change :giggle:,absolute cracker of a car give it some beans just to start the running in period in but not to much though, just enough to scare yourself for a few seconds B),but do not drive it like an old granny needs to be driven like you've got a semi on sometimes :wonder::o,other than that enjoy!!

agreed, don't be too gentle when running in guys, I would suggest you drive it normally from the off, you will end up with a better performing engine in the end

Thanks for your comments folks

Yes basically I'm driving normally just holding back if traffic slows or two commercials in inside and middle lanes rather than accelerating out in to the outside lane where even at 80-85mph you often get someone right on your bumper as they have had to slow down from close to 100mph.

Once 1000miles on the clock I will give full throttle and revs. Since all my regular roads are relatively flat all I can do when traffic allows is full throttle acceleration in 2nd and 3rd up to the red line plus hold in 3rd gear although at steady speed loading not like blasting up a 1:10.

Economy is not my concern now, I just posted for interest and comparison with my Audi A4 19.TDi PD, which was the most economical car I have ever owned despite also being the largest, heaviest and most powerful.

For my current journey pattern my mpg will always a bit less than the best some of you achieve because of stop-start traffic particularly in a morning and short weekend journeys.

I have noticed both slight hesitation right at the start of the throttle travel and slight judder / vibration when starting off in first. Both may well just be everything settling down or simply typical of this engine / gearbox combination. If either are still there after around 2000 miles then I will get the dealer to at least check the car so if any future issues it gets recorded that I reported potential problems. If either gets worse of course I be on to the dealer sooner.

Yes I'll keep you updated from time to time.
