Is this cutch going to be pants?

Featured Replies

I've been looking at this clutch and DMF on flea-bay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SKODA-SUPERB-1-9TDI-130-AWX-DUAL-MASS-FLYWHEEL-CLUTCH-/220344890962?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item334d943652

The shop seems very reluctant to tell me what brand it is, with their final answer being:

"hello,

we will send you whatever we have in stock. it is not a specific make.

thanks,

admin"

I've given them the engine code, a reg number (not mine), all as requested, but they still won't tell me the brand. :S

Am I missing something, or is it just because they know the clutch is 5hite? I can always return it but it's hassle, especially with the weight of it.

Any ideas anyone? Cheers

Likely to be a reburbished clutch. If your not sure and it seems like your saving a little too much, Dont bother.

I have asked them questions about brands before and they hadn't got a scooby ....... so I bought elsewhere, it's not worth the gamble IMO.

I just had another reply from them:

"hi please note all our items are 100%new

the clutch kit and flywheel we do 3 makes valeo , saches ,luk wich ever one we have at the time of order we will send it for you

thanks

ziggy"

If that's true, then it seems to be a pretty good deal doesn't it? Valeo, Sachs (I presume he means Sachs and not Saches), and LUK are all good quality brands.

There must be a catch :S

Well if it isn't one of those brands, send it back.

I could do, but it's a hassle. Is it a good price for the clutch and a DMF do you think?

I honestly do not know, you could try searching for the similar parts on sites like GSF and Eurocarparts to compare prices.

Already done it

Eurocarparts have an LUK DMF and clutch kit for £470 with free post, so the flea-bay kit isn't a million miles away.

I'll ring Eurocarparts and see what the torque rating is. I'm thinking of getting a remap so I'll need at least a 260lbft rating. I think the LUK is rated to about 300lb ft though.

Hmmm, have to wait and see

Not a fan of LUK tbh, I know they make the genuine VAG ones, but I don't think what you buy is the same as what VAG gets, Quinten Hazel is another to avoid if they're still trading, might show as a QH clutch these days, of course they could've got better with time, who knows, but I remember putting a LUK on in something and it was awful and didn't last long either.

I've had problems with LuK clutches too (non VAG application). The diaphragm spring was incorrectly designed so the pedal force did not reduce near full travel - pathetic. As their lousy leaky tandem pumps were the subject of a VAG recall, I would avoid them.

Yikes :o

Good advice folks. So without going down the SMF route, what's the best clutch and DMF I can get to handle up to 300lb ft torque? I don't really need a SACHS uprated kit but can't find much else out there.

just a bit off topic...

clutches are not an area I know anything about,

but what's the difference between clutches for a 1.9 (130) and a 2.5?

Are they interchangeable?

If so, would a 2.5 spec do for a 130 with a remap?

Or is this a totally muppet question? :D

cheers

I would guess just the diameter of it, 2.5 is probably a bit larger.

  • 2 weeks later...

Has anyone done a SMF conversion - I think this would be a much more robust long term solution - assuming there are no adverse drivability concerns, or torsional damper (pulley) failures. Anyone any experience of this?

  • Author

Some people swear by the SMF, and others warn against due to potential gearbox damage with the extra vibrations.

I've read that Valeo do a conversion kit with a spring-dampener to replicate the DMF damping quality, but can't find out much else about it.

I've tried the Passat forums but still not enough info to convince me
