Intermittent problem. CR vRS rattly engine noise sounds like PD engine!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

As the title suggests my CR engined vRS has developed a problem. The engine sounds really harsh and the drive can be jerky. This happens intermittently and at low revs in traffic. If I slip it into neutral the tick over is rock solid so I'm doubtful of an injector problem but I'm a little stumped.

I took the car to the dealer & typically it behaved perfectly on a test drive and showed up no faults on diagnostics. My car has 1800 miles on the clock and has been treated really carefully from new.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am starting to suspect the DMF. How I'll manage to convince the dealer is another matter entirely.

Does anybody have any clues at all?

The noise happens at low revs & low load, the only way I can describe it is the engine sounds harsh.

The gear change can be a little less smooth than I think it should be.

The problem is still intermittent & I know it won't do it if I take it to the dealer again!

I really do suspect the dual mass flywheel, does anyone have any experience of these failing?

Please help if you can.

not a mechanic in anyway, could it be the way it is driven?

i had a dsg vw jetta sport 2.0 tdi and it was really smooth on motorway however in traffic it seemed jerky. i noticed it more after being driven at speed on motorway then when slowing down in town and driving after the high speeds.

i think there might be a knack to driving the dsg.

I doubt if the problem is the DMF as when this fails it is noisy when the engine is idling. Could the problem be in the drive train? drive shafts, cv joints or wheel bearings etc?

I hear what you're saying but when it happens it's different to normal, when it jerks it actually does it a few times not just the once! That's why I suspected inertia in the flywheel. The jerking is little akin to driving a manual and it really labouring & just about to stall, except that this occurs at approx 1500 rpm. The jerking seems to be once I have lifted off the throttle & are perhaps coming to a stop. The engine definitely sounds different when it is misbehaving too, really rattly & just like my old pd from cold but this happens under light acceleration. Strange thing is it only seems to happen after driving for a mile or 2 in light traffic on a cold engine but never does it straight from cold start.

mmm, i have to say i did find this also with my VW. it had only 30,000 miles on it when i got it and turned out was head gasket going in the car. not sure if that had anything do with it or not but i certainly had the same experience with the dsg.

had 3 merc auto before that and they were absolutely fine. i decided to go back to a manual with the new car.

take the car to another dealer maybe and talk it through with them, you drive it with the mechanic in it and try recreate the issue.

hope you get it sorted mate.

I had a dmf fail, it makes a rattling noise when in park, it was intermittent, cost me 1k euro to fix it. If you take it to a garage they will let you know without lifting the bonnet.

The gearbox is adaptive so will adapt over time to the driving style, if I want to cure the jerkiness I just drive it harder and it seems to calm down.
