Learning more about my vrs

Featured Replies

Lads I'm looking at starting to up the power in my vrs but first I wanna learn a little more about the engine, like, how reliable the engine is to take the modding? Standard compression ration's? Standard turbo boost? How strong are the standard internals? Leads me to what power can standard internals handle? What boost? And where should I start?

Just basically looking to learn what I can before I start modding

Looking forward to replys

Furry on here has a MK1 VRS with 150k miles and has been remapped from new. They are very reliable as long as they are regularly serviced and maintained. Standard boost is around 10psi, remap will take it up to around 19psi, the weak points of the engine are the rods as they have a hole though them to allow oil to pass, even these are good for over 250bhp. I've heard people say that the pistons are good for 400bhp. Chasing anything over 225bhp will cost a lot of money, to go stage 2 will cost you around £1k - £1.5k depending how cheap you get parts. To go hybrid (265bhp) would be about another £1.5k. Stage 1 or 2 is what most people go for.

Defo worth upgrading suspension as the standard car doesn't handle to well. Rear anti roll bar is a good start. You may also want to look at uprating the brakes if you are going for big power as they aren't the best although perfectly good for standard.

Stage 1 remap with all the bits needed i.e. panel filter and uprated DV will only set you back around £300 -£350 and is the best bang for your buck.

Hey thanks for the reply, I would be happy only with 220ish bhp, Iv already fitted a dv006 diverter and an itg panel filter, I will be fitting a forge turbo intake pipe, a miltec cat back, a walbro fuel pump, and a fmic, along with a remap I'm hoping this should see me around that figure? I will be trying my best to keep the car as quiet as possible, Iv had scooby and a 1.6 mivec Mitsubishi, both where too loud so am looking to keep this quiet, anything else I should consider fitting to that package?

turbo back exhaust not just cat back !!!

Would that be de-cat/ down pipe? Would that make it loud?

to go stage 2 you really need a turbo back exhaust with either a decat or sports cat, as the standard cat is restrictive.

But going stage 2 would mean forging rods and bigger turbo etc?? I couldnt see myself goin there just yet maybe a few years down the line

no stage 2 all you need is a FMIC, turbo back exhaust, uprated DV and a panel filter. You should really do suspension and brakes as well though

Would standard internals be up to stage 2??

stage 2 is only circa 225, rods are capable of way over that. I think you can run hybrid on standard internals and that's 265bhp ish

Where abouts can a hybrid turbo be got? Seems interesting for down the line, the mods listed in one of my previous post above, what power approx should that see?

Turbo intake pipe won't add any power at all, Cat back won't add any power but will give a better sound, don't know why you want to uprate fuel pump, I don't think this is necessary unless you are going big power. I don't know a huge amount about hybrids as I doubt I will go this route. Westallc who posted on here knows all about them (and more).

To get to stage 2 you are looking at Turbo back exhaust ~£500+, Remap £250, FMIC ~£500+, plus you should sort out suspension, £600 for coilovers, £160 RARB, and to hybrid you are looking at at least another £1000 and then you will defo have to upgrade brakes so add another £500+.

You need to look at what budget you have, it may be cheaper to buy a faster car

Standard approx 190bhp

stage 1 approx 210bhp (regardless of what some mappers will quote)

Stage 2 approx 225bhp

K03s hybrid approx 265bhp

I see, a fella on vagdrivers.com quotes 10bhp after fitting turbo intake pipe and having it mapped again to suit, being honest if a cat back is purely for noise I won't bother as I don't want to make it noisey, being honest I'd only be talking bout getting it up to 220bhp I'd be happy with, and concentrate on suspension and styling
