Mucky wheelarches & other fun

Featured Replies

Now the better weather has got here, I decided to re-clean the arches out (arch liners) & repaint the calipers. Its still suprising how much soil and junk gets trapped at the wing base & also in general areas. Id recommend also taking the secondary plastic wing shield off and cleaning around the base of this (this is the shield between wing & bulkhead). Beware also of any starting of rust in these parts & treat accordingly. Moreso for people with mudflaps.

I also found 2 large rubber pieces of foam which sit inside the wing...any ideas?

Probably saved a kilo in weight of soil and mud.

I didnt take any sadly. Im thinking they were left in there as a mistake from the factory. They sat against the inner wings (1 each side) maybe as some sort of support while they were being mounted?

Arh, I was wondering if maybe there the bonnet supports from the side of the wings which might have someone been dislodged (hence the picture request).

I had these on my passenger side wing they just fell out.

I was wondering if these had anything to do with the air intake.

To help stop moisture getting into the air box, just a thought.

Thats possible, they were on both sides I noticed. I replaced them anyway.

They were a triangular section of fairly dense foam.

The foam is there as a TSB from VW to recitfy an issue with corrosion. It is there to stop the liner rubbing the inside lip of the arch as it did with my Bora (pre foam), which ended up in 3 attempted repairs and in the end 2 new front wings (all FOC under the 12 year anti corrosion warranty and 18months of fighting to get it!).

they plug onto the arch liner at the top above the center of the wheel if that makes sense, they will only go on one way,as above they stop rubbing and also reduce the amount of crud that passes down the back of the wheel arch liner..
