Do I need a torque wrench?

Featured Replies

Simple, get a 120m long pole1 and attach an object with a mass of 102g at the end, your 120NM of torque is ready to go.

You could use a shorter pole and a larger mass if that's easier.

1) Note that the pole should have zero mass, which may be impractical

Zero mass is not necessary. Just get a 240m long pole and attach it to the nut in the middle of the pole!

A 'Lagrange' torque wrench :)

I think there's something out there that suggests the bolts should not be greased as over-torquing can be the result. It's just something I think I've read, but I may be wrong.

drove out of a big UK wide franchised tyre place once with 4 new ones fitted had a all mighty unsettling sound looked in wing mirror could see driver side rear alloy coming in and out of arch by a good few inches went back in at about 0.000001mph ( had only made it 20 metres) and asked them to tighten them up please. were all on that wheel about half a turn by fingers, id seen them torque the rest just human error and I was happy no harm had been done was lucky though. Have had exact same thing on articulated lorries some numpties about! Also seen a super single go straight on when a tanker went right :D hehe :giggle:
