Draining cooling fluid - how?

Featured Replies

Does anybody know of an easy way for the mechanically-challenged to drain a few litres out of the cooling system so as to add an additive mixed in with some more coolant? If I pour it straight into the expansion thingy, it won't get distributed throughout the circuit so well... Thanks!

You can use a large turkey baster to suck out some of the old stuff.

:o:rofl: That's going to be fun to find here in France! Fantastic idea though!

pour it in the expansion tank and let car idle for 10 mins with heaters on full - it'll get mixed in fine believe me!

syringe?

Still need to drain some off - so the turkey baster (called 'poire a jus' - juice pear! in French. They do have them, just never seen one here) will be just the job.

I'm bunging in some K-Seal I got off EBay UK (not available in France, what a surprise) - there are some who say it'll help with my porous cylinder head. Wait and see - if it does, I stand to save a few quid, and if it doesn't, well, it was worth a try!

If it's only a small amount - use the expansion tank method as described; but if you want to drain "Several litres off" as you state, best method in the time honoured tradition is to undo the bottom hose.

Ii's pretty straightforward, but if you've not done it before, suggest find someone who has, and who can run through with you how to do it. Main thing when refilling is to avoid airlocks. Some cars are worse than others in that respect. Hope that helps.

Throw the K-Seal in the expansion tank and go for a good drive to get the engine to temperature.

I had a pinhole leak in my radiator and that fixed it straight away, so it must get round the system pretty quickly.

If I look in the expansion tank now you can't tell it ever had K-Seal in it so it does mix pretty well, that is after about a month.

Thanks, all! Looks as though I was giving myself a lot of trouble for nothing much. Once the level in the expansion tank has dropped a bit I'll chuck it in, pray and hope!

As long as you aren't above the max line already, just throw it in. There isn't much in a bottle of K-Seal anyway!

If after adding the k seal your car doesn't warm up it's probably stuck the thermostat open.

The new dual thermostat systems don't like it at all, but you could get away with it on yours.

For reference, which engines have dual thermostats???

Hope so... :|

If you have a leak, get it fixed or sell it on ....
