Octavia vs Superb - recurring issues

Featured Replies

Having been an Octavia owner for 4 years, and an avid reader of topics in the Octavia forum of Briskoda, there have been a few faults with the Octavia that crop up time and time again (some of which I have had with my car). These include:

- Delaminating windscreens

- DMF failure

- Rear wash stops working - either blockage or pipe disconnects in boot

- Uneven tyre wear on the VRS

- Excessive road noise

- Wind noise from rear quarterlights

- Interior creaks and rattles

I've been trawling through the Superb II forum going back about 30 pages but either I'm missing them, or these type of common issues don't seem to affect the Superb.

From those owners who have had their cars for a while, are they afflicted by similar issues? Do Superbs have there own foibles that occur time and time again?

I'm about to order a Superb estate and don't want to be disappointed!

Many thanks in advance

Don't know about the rear wipe since I have the saloon/hatch, No problems with the DMF,screen or tyre wear.

Wind noise is virtually non existent, road noise is low considering the 18 wheels and the low profile tyres, interior is far superior to Octy.

Go and buy with confidence.

Specialist cars in Dundee have two new Superb estates on the forecourt and two hatches also. the estates are 140cr diesels if i remember correctly,One is a silver Elegance and the other is an SE, You could miss out on the long wait if they suit.

You won't be disappointed! Having had a Superb estate they seem to be better put together then the Octavias and do give a more luxurious feel - never had a problem with mine!

I have had an 11 plate Octavia as a courtesy car when my dashboard was replaced. It was the noisiest vehicle I have driven, I am sure that there is no sound proofing used, the engine sounded as if it was inside the car, road noise was very bad, also there seemed to be a lot of wind noise. I mentioned this when I picked up my Superb Elegance Combi, "well you have been spoilt having Superb's" I suppose I have this is my third, 1 MkI only comfort, 1 MkII Elegance 170 DSG Hatch, and Now the Combi 170 manual, just one other point about hearing noises, I am getting slightly deaf in one ear.

Took delivery on November 1st last year.

10,000 miles without any of the octy problems mentioned above.

The only dealer work has been to replace the speakers and to adjust the headlights.

The one gripe I have is that the rear wiper does not clear the top third of the glass too well.

I used to think there was nothing better than an Audi, but this car has changed my mind.

It's a brilliant combination of space and comfort with a superb build quality.

Mine is more than 2 years old now with 32k miles on the clock.no faults to report at all

I bought my Octavia VRS (petrol) as a demonstrator, it had done close to 10,000 miles and was very keenly priced almost to the point of being cheap. The thinking was that it would be a bit of fun for 12 months by which time it would have started to fall apart, after all it was a Skoda, and I'd buy something sensible.

How wrong can you be. With nearly 70,000 on the clock it been the best car I've ever owned and a good friend to me. I would have had another exactly the same if it had been heavy enough to tow the caravan I've just bought without checking weights first.Ooops!

Every car is a compromise. Economy against performance, handleing against ride, practicality against looks and fun, cost against quality. This has been by far the best compromise car ever. Quick, comfortable, well built (no rattles yet), completely practical with that enormous boot, fairly cheap to run and reliable. I can honestly say that I've enjoyed every minute I've spent behind the wheel and I only hope that the Superb thats on its way to me now lives up to the reputation the Octavia has created.

Did things go wrong? Not really, nothing done under warrantee, but a washer jet did get blocked and the brake light bulbs seemed to have a short life, but then again 4 or 5 bulbs in 60k isn't that bad.

Compare that with some of the 'better' cars I've owned, 3 Mercs, 3 Saab, 3 Volvos and 2 Discoverys ( If it didn't go wrong it wouldn't be a Land Rover). Only one car comes close to the Skoda's reliability and that was a diesel Golf in which the cruise control failed during its 80k life with me.

I'm glad to read that the superb is better build quality than octavia. My 15 month old octy sounds more and more like a 10 year old mondeo! no offence to mondeo owners.

I had my Octavia L&K estate (07 plate) for nearly 2 years - no problems ever. In fact, it was only given a mild eyebrow lifting when we took it for its first (variable) service and they performed a recall type repair to the wiring loom (we'd never seen anything wrong). Then the only difficulty was that it took longer to repair than expected.

We upgraded to the Superb as it was essentially a straight swap (same finance payment for a bit longer) and it stopped the kids from kicking the back of my chair, as they could in the Octy.

We have had the Superb for 18 months, 17000 miles, just had first service and the only problem was the radio, which didn't work on initial collection from dealer. It took a while to fix, as we didn't have a warranty authorised dealer locally and moved house and collected from a different dealer in the first place.

- Delaminating windscreens - Been through 2 windscreens on our Octy and one on the Superb , stone damage every time

- DMF failure - Not been an issue on either of our cars yet, but DMF are a common issue on most cars

- Rear wash stops working - either blockage or pipe disconnects in boot - My mums fabia had this happen once, caused by trying to use the washers when frozen

- Uneven tyre wear on the VRS - Factory geometry settings wrong , easy fix

- Excessive road noise - thats what you get with wide tyres comes with the Superb as well

- Wind noise from rear quarterlights - was a warranty fix on our Octavia

- Interior creaks and rattles - not a problem on ours
