Steering rack internal play

Featured Replies

Just been checking over the Fabia and found a bit of a fault.....the drivers side front wheel when jacked off the ground has some play in it which I noticed as play in the steering rack....not the body but the arms that move in and out & attach to the hubs, move about 3/4mm.....dont know what the answer is but it dosnt look good.....New rack or is it fixable?

Dosnt happen on the passenger side.

Just had a look around, seems its not an uncommon problem......seems a new track rod is the answer???? is it an easy job to replace one on your own? and is it dangerous to drive the car until its fixed?

Worn track rod end joints are an MOT fail, and 3-4mm is quite a lot of play so it is probably best advised not to drive it much. Doable yourself, try to note exactly how many turns it takes to remove it from the track rod and put the new one on by that amount. If you get lost you would need to get tracking adjusted, although it may be a good idea to have it done regardless.

Its not the track rod end that has the play....sorry its probably my terrible description...its the track rod where it disappears into the steering rack that has the play.

Sorry I misread "track rod" as "track rod end". If the play is in the track rod itself it probably wouldn't be a fun job. Probably easier to swap the entire steering rack.

Also....where on earth is the power steering reservoir?????.....mine seems to be hiding from me

Have repacked by placing shims in the track control arm to rack so long ago in the past, and have forgotten how I did it (that's not much use to you eh!, sorry)

Under the battery tray - great place for it I know!

You need to remove battery to get access.

But that means its possible so there is a ray of hope...if its not more than a days job and its not dangerous to continue driving I`ll do it next weekend..Thanks all for the help so far :-)

Does anyone know if its safe to continue driving?

Just as a follow up if anyone searches with a similar problem and comes across this thread.

The play turned out to be movement in the ball and socket joint in the track rod and some play in the track rod end......£130 for both from the dealers, no leaks or other issues with the steering rack so all is good and handling is back on track B)
