Digital tuning boxes, why better than analogue?

why is a digital tunning box better that an analogue one?

MJ,

an analogue system is basically a resistor which fools the ECU into overfuelling the engine (very simple explanation). Some of the better analogue ones have variable resistors so that you can tweak the responses and a good fitter/tech can set it up to be quite good.

The digital boxes use various inputs and select a new "map" depending in the conditions.

I've tried both types: the analogue was great when correctly set up, although it was smokey. When I swapped it over into a newer car with the same ASV engine it didn't perform too well: very smokey and flat spotted and lit up the engine management light a few times so I changed to a digital box (PSi Powerbox from East Coast Racing)

:thumbup: Superb!!! Easy to fit and the dealer told me it would not invalidate the warranty (in fact the owners of the garage bought them to install into their cars!).

Run for over a year and around 40,000 miles with zero problems: in fact there is a setting in the box which allows more power to be unleashed and that's why I'm on this part of the forum: I've finally decided to tweak the box and am looking for a few recommends regarding suppliers of induction kits and panel filters.

Hope this help?

Any other questions, just ask and I'll try and answer as quickly as possible,

cheers

cheers mate. i just ordered a dragon tunning box and i should get it mon/ tues? does a cupra intake and green filter inprove the gains made by a tunning box like they do on a remap??

Certainly with the PSi Powerbox they do: there is a "jumper" inside the box to allow "extra" power but the company say it should only be selected once an induction kit is fitted.

I'm posting on another thread to get more info on this: but it stands to reason, if the car is breathing more easily then the digital mapping should reflect this and increase the power a bit more.

If I get anymore info I'll let you know

Be careful with that extra power :cool::D:D:thumbup:

Stan,

I currently have an analogue box, which runs very well, but considering a digital box. I have been pricing the PSI powerbox, and was wondering is it a stand alone unit, or does it have a connector wire to the MAF sensor??

Cheers

so a digital box will compensate for a green filter and cupra intake?? and increase power accordingly??? this wouldnt happen on an analogue one?

Not compensate, but compliment. Theres only so much more fuel you can give your car without requiring extra air. It would work exactly the same on an analogue module. The higher you have it turned up, the more air you need, hence a better filter or an induction kit.

Ouch, the PSI powerbox is

i know it is in the price bracket of a remap but people go for boxes for other reasons than all out power. so for them reasons people are getting what they want which they consider better than a remap. eg i just ordered a digital box of dragon, cost me 280 quid. bought it because i want ease of fitting, not having to travel 200 miles to jabba. easy removable for warrenty etc, jabba isnt. not tunned to the xtreme which will kill the cluch. dragon say there box ups power to between 160 and 170 bhp. when i sell the car i can keep the box for next car of sell that too, gettin some of my money back.

these are some of the reasons people go for a box over a remap and are willing to pay remap prices to get the benifits.

I know that, you dont have to convince me (remember all the threads I've asked about tuning boxes lately ;)), its just that

Not personally, as mine is still boggo at the mo till I get some money to do it.

wish they would hurry up and ring back!!!! waiting go gym!! tight sched today, cookin a meal later for the girl friend, should prove interensing! lol

the ones I've come across that are fully digital don't need a wire into the MAF; they are completly stand alone units.

Insurance :bonk: Knew there was summat I forgot to do!!!

Nah, I'm not that stuopid:

tey never rung back ya know!!! ill try them again tomorrow.

It is interesting you are able to get insurance on one of these boxes but that remaps cause problems in that regard?

As the title says: I have no idea why the insurance company accepted this mod: but they seemed happy with it: apparently they'd dealt with it before.

Maybe cos I'm a safe driver :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Interesting... but I have also heard of folks who had cheaper quotes for a remap than on a tuning box... go figure ;)

they wont insure me!!! what a ball ache!! thing is i have drove my car with it on now so if i deside to send it back my car will feel slow.

So you like it then?

Wotcha!

I've had a Dragon digital box for around three weeks now. I had already fitted the green filter/cupra intake mods.

I initially used the supplied set up at position 11, approx 2/3 full setting. Was very impressed. Now up to full setting, which to be honest I didn't notice a difference.

Overall, the power is ceratinly up. It pulls furiously in any gear from 2000 right up to around 4000 rpm, if I switch off the eps system it becomes almost unmanagable on slippery surfaces. The engine seems smoother, more willing to rev freely and as an added bonus seems to 'growl' alot more (Icould be imagining this bit!). No smoke neither!

I've just done a 250 mile round trip to Aberystwyth through the Brecons and it was a gas! I could overtake with confidence and use the power through some of the lovely sweeping corners on the A470.

I bought my box for
