DSG Question

Featured Replies

If you use the paddles to shift down a couple of gears in one go, does the engine raise the revs automatically to match the lower gear(s)?

I was IAM trained to match all downshifts seamlessly so am curious to see if technology can do the same.

Before you ask, I didn't specifically find out on the test drive, doh!

I had a DSG in an Octavia previously, and when I was in manual mode, dropping a gear or two was possible very easily, but I believe the car will not change if it thinks the revs will be too high.

I don't think it is possible to make the car red-line, at all.

Hi it does do an auto blip on down changes, but i wouldn't say its completely seamless. Also i noticed on mine if you pull the paddle twice quickly it tends to change down in singles, rather than just going say from 7-5 instantly. (maybe thats just mine)

Yes I believe the DSG does blip the throttle to match downshifts. I gave my test car some fairly hard use and it changed gear much better than I ever could with a manual shift. Only issues are that unless in S mode it does tend to go up though the gears a little sooner than I would like, pulling away for stationary can be a little jolty too.

Thanks for the responses.

Interesting point about not allowing the engine to redline, you'd have to be a complete idiot to think you could go (for example) from 7th to 1st at motorway speeds!

I might trouble an unsuspecting dealer for another test drive...

Still waiting on my RS to arrive but have a question about DSG....if I was sitting in D in 7th gear and I was waiting for an opportunity to overtake, I use the paddles to drop to 4th/5th. How long will it stay in 4th/5th before moving back up to 7th?

I suppose in the above instance, I'd be better just shifting it into manual mode or S

it will be entirely up to you. If you are in D or S, then the paddles just over ride what the computer thinks the correct gear is (i.e. your manual kick down) and will revert back to D or S if you do nothing after a short while. Or, if after passing your obstacle, you can then just use the padle to shift back up. i guess though you are really interested in when after putting thecar into what i call semi manual, when will it automatically change up and perhaps catch you out, say mid corner?

For total manual mode though (and most fun), knock the selector to the left (i think this can only be done from D) and you will notice (if doing this from a standstill) that the idle revs increase to about 1200 rpm which is the same as you will find for S mode. you can then change gear via either the paddles or the gear selector (forward for up, back for down) and thus have complete control. However, i haven't gone through the complete rev range to see if it will automatically change up when you hit the line, but suspect you will, and once your are into third gear, you will be starting to travel at some fairly fast speeds.

The DSG does automatically shift up at the red line to prevent damage to the gearbox and engine components...

It can't do a direct 7-5 as the odd gears are on the same clutch, it will swap clutches the allow the odd side of the box to change to 5th then swap clutches back. It can do this in 600milliseconds though, (300milli seconds per downshift)so you may not even notice it has done it.

It could directly change 7th to 4th though.
