1.6 CR diesel - very pleasantly surprised!

Featured Replies

Had an Octavia Elegance 1.6 CR diesel with 7 spd DSG as a courtesy car last week.

I just couldn't get over how quiet it was! My last Octavia was a 1.9TDi that I thought was OK but this engine is just as quiet as my 1.8 petrol except at tickover and when it is being pressed really hard.

Performance wasn't blistering but I managed a couple of A road overtakes by slipping into "S" and flooring the throttle and once the engine got wound up it just flew! Maybe that affected the mpg! Only had the computer to go on but after 40 miles of mixed A roads it only showed 45mpg. Under similar conditions the old 1.9 would have been in the low 50's, my current 1.8 TSI 38-39. It did only have 2500 miles on the clock though.

Was thinking I had made a mistake abandoning diesel but then I got my 1.8TSI back minus the annoying rattle from the tailgate and knew I had made the right decision.

Interesting comments from folk at work too - when I arrived in my bright, new, shiney Corrida Red Octavia last October it made quite an impression! One guy even ordered himself a VRS. Courtesy car was Anthracite - several people commented "Doesn't look as good as yours!"

BUT the difference in road noise between my 17 inch Bridgestones (6500 miles) and the courtesy car's 16 inch non Bridgestones was MASSIVE! (can't remember what they were! not Dunlop - Firestone maybe?).

Note to self - see what happens when I get rid of these horrible Bridgestones but maybe next one will be back to standard suspension and 16" wheels!

Red is the best colour though ;)

Rather than start a new post, recent experience with the 1.6 Cr diesel DSG.

Over the past 2169 miles , brimming the tank very carefully, a total of 179.78 litres which I make 39.55 gall = 54.84mpg (incl for a few short bursts of 100mph Italian "tune up" running in)

The last 360 miles on Sunday & Monday gave exactly 60 mpg,( well 27.26l = 5.998 gall) which included about 200 miles total of 60/75 mph main road driving, 100 miles of this each day,, the rest being pootling about stopping & starting &sightseeing.

So I'ziz be well please.
