Air Con?

Featured Replies

Hi.

I have read other air con threads, and seeking more advice as my octy is fairly new to me. I know the system was charged/discharged (on history printout) @ 96k / 23/07/09. Now @ 112k. I've only owned a month or so, and heater & controls work fine, just no cold air. Is it likely (normal) to need re-gassing so soon after only 1.5 UK summers?

Cheers.

Apparently it's supposed to have an air con service every 2 years. Which would sort out any issues by cleaning and re-gassing the system. I'm due to have it done later this year but I should have my new vrs by then

What's the total amount of gas in the system?

No it's not normal to need re-gassing that soon.

Mine is still on it's original gas (8 years), and is fairly cold. Getting re-gassed this weekend tho, ready for summer.

Does it say why it was regassed, because AFAIK delers don't class it as a service item.

Don't know how to measure gas in system. Did'nt think it would need doing again. Looking for other possible diagnosis / problems, & how / where to check condenser (is it?). Only going by the Autolease service printout saying R&R Air Con System-charge/discharge LOW. Fairly sure this means was low & now charged, could be wrong though. As always forewarned is forearmed, & don't want to waste money. A bit of knowledge & all that.

Cheers again.

I'm not sure if it's a service item now due to the amount of compressors failing but my dealer said it's supposed to be serviced every two years

Without having a good look, which I'm afraid I'm not inclined to do at the moment, on most air con systems ther is a sight glass on the pipework or fittings somewhere, through which you can see the liquid, if there is bubbles in the liquid then there is a fair chance that the system needs topping up. There was another thread started recently about air con problems by Andrew S Wales I believe.

Yep.

It's been a long standing rule that they should be done every 2 years, but it has never been an official service item.

I was wondering if the OP's car has had something wrong with the AC, hence the need for the regas in 2009.

ive got the same problem at the moment, no cold air! mines on 97k and ive been told by a local vw specialist its more than likly the compressor pack up!?

Apparently an ever increasing problem!

My boss is a tight northerner an awl, lol.

Was assuming that the recharge @ 4yrs old was maybe reasonable if the air con had been used a lot during it's 96k miles' maybe. Any way of self testing the compressor?

To diagnose the system you really need to know the low and high side pressures after ensuring it has the correct charge.

All the a/c service machines display this information so don't be afraid to ask
