Gear stick question

Featured Replies

What do you call the housing that the ball at the bottom of the gear stick sits in? I think mine is broken!!!...Coming back from a drive away yesterday i was coming down the gears to round a corner then went from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th the shift felt very slack and there was a clunking noise whilst changing!!...I thought that maybe something was stuck in there to create the noise!!...When i got home i lifted the gear surround and had a wee look and it looks to me that part of the white plastic housing that the ball sits in has broken away and there seems to be excessive movement!!

Any ideas folks?

Here's a picture, but if it's broken there''s sweet FA you can do about it. Dunno how it got broken though? :wonder:

I did look too - but was also struggling for the terminology!

But that was the image I had in my head of what has broken. Either way, it's a warranty fix to resolve - but never heard of one breaking before! Would say it's not been fitted correctly at the factory, or the part has failed due to a manufacturing weakness.

yep thats the bit....seems nice and tight and smooth between 1st and 2nd then between 2nd and 3rd when it goes past the neutrel position theres a knocking sound and it seems more slack, the same between 3rd and 4th. Dont know whether they havent lubed it enough or what...when i had a look in the loan car the housing seems to be the same!!...where the pivot ball sits in the white collar it looks like a dog has chewed the edges were as you would have thought it would be all smooth! Can hardly see why they would purposley roughen the ages!!...Anyway im sure knowing my luck the garage will come back and theres nothing wrong!!!

As thought the dealer says theres nothing wrong!!..think he has a point as i went out for a drive in the other demo octy thats got more miles on than mine and it does the same!! He put some xtra lube on it and thats about all...just doesnt have a feel of solidity or quality more like the gear change from a old escort with a feww hundred thousand miles on the clock!!!...maybe im just too fussy!!!
