Ipad2 16gb or iPad1 64gb

Featured Replies

I can get either one of these for £400.

Are the extra features of the iPad2 and the much smaller memory worth having over the original with its 64gb?

I am only getting the wi-fi version as i am not paying another subscription for data, will use it mainly at home and in the office where i have wi fi.

Cheers

Get the 2..

Its much much more powerful, and if you use it at home, it sounds like you wont need the storage space as you can use airplay to stream... plus if the IOS5 rumblings are to be believed.. itunes/sync will be moving into the cloud this year (no wireless sync is a massive annoyance of mine at the mo)

I'm in a similar quandary. Imho, it would be wrong to buy the first gen now if you expect to benefit from future revisions.

But I don't think 16gb will be enough so I'm having to look at the wifi 32gb iPad 2 which annoyingly increases the US/UK price gap again.

If you dont mind waiting, keep an eye on hotukdeals/quidco - a bunch of people got some less than a week after launch from tescodirect for about 50quid less with various cashback/voucher offers.

i have a 32gb and its full, admittedly 60% of it is not really required, as all the music is on my ipod and im not likely to watch the videos... but some of the games (infinity blade etc) are starting to get upwards of 500mb a go...

and if you do get a ipad2 you *have* to get infinity blade and real racing 2 to show it off.

real racing has proper 1080p output if you have the hdmi dongle.. making it more powerful than the xbox/ps3!

Thanks for the replies guys.

I really have to stick to my budget on this one. Which is £400.

Tell me more about this "airplay" thing???

Basically means as long as you are on the same network, you can stream stuff from your itunes library to your i-device.

The ipad1 will have this feature too, but not trying to **** on anyones bonfire, but apple dont have a good history with support of older "gen" devices.. not on purpose.. but a good example is when IOS4 was released, iphone 3g users complained that it ran much slower than previous releases. with the ipad 2 being the first move to multi-core hardware the same thing could happen again.

Interesting article i read today also about the ipad 2

Over priced for my liking. I'd personally look at either an Android tablet like the Galaxy Tab (v2 on way soon) or any of the other brands like acer or HTC. Cheaper and only storage limit is the sizes of SD card available.

Mind? There's not much choice at the moment  I'm ready to buy but looking for stock or anything to sweeten the deal.

My opinion on ipads won't count for a lot but I'd take the 16gb v2 and learn to live with the storage limitations. What someone described to me was once you've got the stuff you 'need' on it you're down to 11-12gb.

sorry but thats not true at the mo.. the tabs coming to market now are pretty much the same price for inferior build quality... ie the XOOM. i would have loved to get a android tab, but for the same cost, the apple beasts it... and im NOT a fanboi.

I have the iPad 64GB wifi.

A friend has the iPad 2 32gb and he is constantly asking me to swap.

The 2 is only 1.5x faster with iOS4.3 (That's testing proved not me just guessing). The only App that im aware of at the moment that the 1 Can't run that the 2 can is iMovie. To be honest movie editing on an iPad is a bit daft (i've tried it on my iPhone) and unless you are doing very very basic stuff then i wouldn't recommend it.

The 2 has nice features like the smart cover etc. But to be honest their aren't very many apps yet that utilise the potential of the iPad 2.

As people will tell you on here i am an Apple Fanboi and i haven't upgraded.

I would recommend you get the 64GB iPad. You won't be disappointed

Seen some great discounts which along with cashback makes some Android tabs much cheaper. One the other week put a galaxy tab at £250 mark.

Personally for that price if I was in the market I would have snapped up. For 400+ notes I'll be wanting a laptop everytime.

Which poses an interesting question with regard to memory and apps. When you buy an app, do you effectively have a copy in itunes so you can take it on and off your device as you wish? Will itunes let you download for free in future what you have previously bought to a particular device? Or once its installed, that's it? Uninstall or lose it and you have to buy again?

I've never bought an Android app so never encountered this via marketplace.

That's a 7" tablet? I think that's too small. 9"+ is what you need (so my wife tells me).

Yes thats exactly how it works.. once an app is "bought" either on device or on itunes, it can be synced with any i-device attached to your account, and can be put on/removed at will.. although annoyingly if you remove an app it will delete the saved data with it

Lol I always thought its what you do with it that counts.

How long will you be away from the machine you sync your ipad with? 1 hour, 1 day, 1 month answer that then you can make a better guess at how much storage you need. Do you need 20,000 tunes with you at all times? Will you shoot lots of video before you can download it to another device. Only you know how you will use your device but if you can answer a few simple storage related questions you will get a better idea of your requirements.

Do you need a camera or want the features a camera gives you (facetime etc)? Then it has to be the iPad 2.

tbh i am not bothered about facetime. I probably wont have all of my music on it. It will mainly be used for email and browsing the internet around the home. May use it for powerpoint presentation for work related stuff. Also some simple games like angry birds etc for the kids to play on at home.

Maybe i could just get a 1st gen 16gb. My iphone is no where near full and its only 16gb.

Does your ipad2 hae any problems with backlight leakage?

Hi,

I don't get it, he really wants to swap to your iPad 1 because it has more storage?

Eh? Ru sure your not a fanboi? Lol, judging by the posts on this thread its like the reinvention of the wheel.

But back to op, ipad2 the way forward, memory can always be shifted around with wireless etc. Unless its a must on keeping all the imusic and videos on one device.

I'll ask again, I've been reading about the problem of backlight bleeding, cosmetic damage, and the variations in screen tones. Not impressed tbh.

Anyone with an iPad2 care to comment on the quality of their particular device?

A friend of mine who has an iPad2 hasn't mentioned any of those issues. His screen certainly doesn't appear any different to mine on the iPad.

There's an extensive thread on AVForums and it seems like luck of the draw in how bad it is. Apple denying there's a problem but changing ipads for those who complain which tells its own story.
