Detachable tow ball

Featured Replies

Hi, I have had fitted from new the westfalia detachable tow ball, it states on it a max 80kg, I need to tow a trailer of about 2 1/2 tons, has anyone with this tow ball towed such a weight? Im sure it's a max down weight of 80kg, because that weight is no use to anyone.

I have a Westfalia detachable tow ball.

You can tow the trailer.

The 80kg is the downforce directly onto the ball. With a properly loaded trailer this would not be an issue.

Towing limit of the 4x4 Superb is 2 tonnes... and at 2.5 tonnes, your well over the gross weight of the car... the tow ball will take it, but i wouldn't like to have the conversation with the police man!

Cheers philpix, that's what I thought. What I also understand is the max the car can tow is 2 1/2 tonnes. Not the combined weight of the car plus trailer. Otherwise we We will all be driving around with tiny trailers and 2 person caravans

The most you can hook up to the car is 2 tonne if it is a 4 x 4. I tow a 700kg trailer (superb) and there is no way my car would tow a 2 tonne anything out of my drive as it struggles with our trailer losing traction. Best of luck towing anything approaching 2 tonne.

Yes, 2.0TDI & 3.6 have max. 2ton towing allowed. (But You might need a BE cat., as you go over 3,5ton gross train weight).

However it depends on the country/legislation - I have also towed a piece of machinery weighing 3 tons (with a 2,5ton 4x4) max. 20km/h and special signs and that was legal.

And to be honest my current Saab 9-3SS has a max. 1,5tons and I use it quite often to the limit with some slight struggle in acceleration and petrol consumption but with no problem at all in general... So a Superb should have no problem at all either.

My superb (just arrived) has the tow bar preparation fitted as an extra, forgive my ignorance on this, but just what exactly does that mean!?

The electrics are wired to a plug behind the nearside panel in the boot. The dedicated wiring kit has a 13 pin socket pre wired to another plug, an ecu and fittings. The ecu attaches to the wing under the tail light and both plugs plug in, get the car coded and the electrics are working

This is from the latest brochure.

This towbar can take up to a 50kg vertical load on the ball joint. The maximum towing load you're allowed varies by the type of trailer - 1200kg for a trailer with brakes, 450kg for one without (electric kit is required, and fitting).
