The drivers obviously have very good protective gear.

That's what 75 litres of bioethanol plus a spark looks like!

Blimey.

Shouldn't really be possible for that to happen though, as the result of a rear-end shunt emoticon-0104-surprised.gif

Mr Baker21 could polish them both outemoticon-0136-giggle.gifemoticon-0136-giggle.gifemoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Woah..... :o

Get a bit of t-cut on it and all will be fixed ;)

Anybody else thinking buy the engine (rear impact) and fit it to a Fabia...?

That poor man seem to have burnt his hands quite badly :(

Thought that too. Anyone know if he was ok?

Looked like the heat was taking a bit of time to work through his suit.

V8 Supercar driver Karl Reindler was forced to run for his life after his Holden Commodore went up in flames at the beginning of a race in Perth, Australia. A rear end collision with fellow driver Steve Owen punctured the car's fuel cell, causing it to explode in the unbelievable manner you see here. While Reindler's $600,000 Holden was destroyed beyond repair, both drivers involved in the crash managed to escape with relatively minor injuries.
V8 Supercar driver Karl Reindler is out of hospital and resting at home in Perth after his incredible escape from a burning Holden Commodore at Barbagallo Raceway.

Reindler has second degree burns to his hands and minor burns to his face after his car stalled on the grid, was rear-ended, and exploded in flames on Sunday.

Somehow West Australian Reindler clawed his way out of the inferno as his $600,000 car was all but incinerated.

Reindler paid tribute to V8 medical staff, his own pit crew and those from rivals Kelly Racing and Holden Racing Team, who were first on the scene and helped extinguish the fire.

"It was a horrible feeling with fire inside the car," said Reindler, whose hands are heavily bandaged.

"I could feel my face burning, I couldn't get the chains (safety harness) off.

"Luckily the car and (race) suit did what they were supposed to do.

"But I'm back at home now and on the road to recovery."

Perhaps the unsung hero of the fire was Reindler's race suit - made of three layers of fireproof material.

Despite part of the safety harness melting on to the suit's outside, it remained largely intact.

That ensured flames were kept well away from Reindler's body - saving him far more serious injuries.

He was in the flames for approx 11 seconds, so with a triple layer Nomex suit over his body he should have been OK for a short while more. The problem is they only have single layer gloves plus a single layer balaclava beneath the helmet, and 10 seconds is pushing it for that.

He was incredibly lucky the Fire Car was behind the grid and could get in straight away.

The guy that hit him was only able to react and brake the second he hit him.

Both lucky me thinks.

There was a simliar incident at Thruxton last weekend in the Ginetta G50/55 support race, not quite as explosive though! :o At least know one was hurt.
