Remapped Vrs vs Cooper S

Featured Replies

I dunno which is worse:

The fact that this thread exists or the fact that i have just read it all or that I am now replying!! :D

My pov - Does it REALLY matter what's fastest?

I spent my teens driving everywhere like my hair was on fire but have found that i've mellowed out in my 20's.

I'm happy to cruise along at the speed limit or behind slower traffic in fuel saving mode rather than going for massive overtakes so i can bomb along at 100mph.

I find that any overtaking I do on single carriageway roads just gets me to the next slow moving vehicle faster at which point the car i overtook then catches me up. Net gain about a cars length - so why bother!

That said if an open clear sighted twisty road presents itself i won't hang about but traffic light grand prix just aren't for me (much to the annoyance of my other half who almost went through the roof when I dawdled off a set of lights and was "beaten" by a Ford Ka! )

For me driving should be about enjoyment rather than speed.

I enjoy the fact that my car can shift when in the mood but still returns 55mpg (try getting a Cooper S to do that!)

If your enjoyment comes out of traffic light drag races and you HAVE to be fastest otherwise you go home depressed then maybe you should seek some kind of therapy :)

I have left this topic for a while now but as I have owned both the vehicles in question I think it's time to answer the OP's question. In reference to the 200bhp + Fabia vRS's on here vs a stock Honda Civic Type R - I'm just going to keep this thread 'On Topic' and answer the OP's question.

So, will a Skoda Fabia vRS with a remap beat a Honda Civic Type R - (I presume you mean EP3) as standard? - In my opinion, It's close but I'm afraid this would be a no. At Santa pod my Fabia vRS with a stage 1 remap wouldn't beat my friends standard Honda Civic Type R. Once the VTEC kicks in the Honda really does shift.

If you wish to take this to the next stage - The Honda Civic Type R can have the ECU changed so the VTEC kicks in lower down - Given this and a few other choice mods already mentioned within this thread, leave well alone. It's also all about the driver - There is the main fact that other drivers may not even be trying. This resulting in you 'beating xxx' in a 'race' / 'Getting the jump' on them when they aren't ready. This is why we do track days/RR days etc.

I have said this before and will say it again. If you do wish to compare cars - I'm sure the people on http://civictype-r.co.uk/forum/ would be more than willing to attend a RR day / Pod trip vs Briskoda. This should resolve the comments and threads as such on here.

Hope this helps,

I like these stories and comparatives. Lets me know what car I should/should not get next.

I had a play against a friend in his tweaked civic 1.8 vti (such a nice note when flooring it), on the high speed bends he started to floated away but anywhere more than 300m of straight road i'd catch up and pull away. He was also very annoyed after some playing I avg'd ~30 mpg :giggle:

I personally dont like people in front of me, dont trust their judgement in speed and observation generally, much rather have them on the rear or disappear if/when possible. Doesn't matter to me if I hit traffic again, as at least I know for that short duration im not behind some potential idiot.

Same applies when on the motorway, when I (rarely) decide to follow cars at a calmer pace there will ALWAYS be at least 1 idiot pulling out/cutting in with cm's to spare whether its slow or fast thinking its ok. I'd much prefer passing 90% of these "safe and mellow" people and letting the remaining 10% "dangerous" bomb past.

For me driving should be about enjoyment rather than speed.

But your happy to be in front of them?! I reckon i'm the opposite.

At least if you are behind someone you have chance to see their mistake/bad judgement happen and adjust your driving accordingly.

If you over take them what's to stop the ploughing into your boot a few miles down the road when you've had to stop.

That said i'll have my preferred cruising speed for the road i'm on and when safe i'd rather overtake someone doing 10 miles an hour less than that speed than sit behind them.

I just find that prefered speed recently is 65 rather than 105 :)

Lol once i've overtaken they wont see me much longer , but if I were to catch up with traffic and they caught up I would leave ample space 3-6 car lengths in front and brake early but smoothly when possible, I rarely stop unless in town, for roundabouts; always 2nd/3rd gear push off.

Its much easier to play it safe when you know danger is behind than in front, as there is an escape route (because you have a choice to make one). Whats the worse that can happen? they increase their speed and ram you from behind at 10-20mph, but if your behind them and they decide to slam on the brakes or have a head on with the oncoming car, there is little way of escaping on a-roads, unlikely but i'd much rather not rely on anyone but myself. I know its a bit backward thinking but imo its better odds this way. :D

This reminds me of fifth gear and top gear shoot outs between standard vrs and standard cooper.

Both ended up with same result!

Cooper was left behind on the track...
