Things to buy in the US

Featured Replies

Hey Guys & Girls!

I'm off to New York at the end of the month, can you guys recommend any tuning parts that would be much cheaper out there? turbo's? clutches? etc?

anyone want anything?

:)

I wonder what the Import Duty is on automotive parts?

no idea, nothing if I black it up and put it in a towel?

On a more serious note - you really don't think you'll be waltzing through customs with various car parts without some kind of issue?

Large metallic objects are certainly going to show-up on X-Ray and once you've walked through the "Green" channel so to speak, the fines for avoiding tax and duty can be quite hefty.

sorry forgot to write *joke*

ofcourse I'd declare etc etc..... just wondering whether there were any significant savings to be had on anything worth getting :)

Imagine walking through customs with a turbo stuffed down your pants and an intercooler in your rucksack. Ha ha.

What's the pound to the dollar now? Defo save a bit of money getting it from there, what do you need is the question?

Pound to Dollar I believe is around £1.66

Alloys? Wheel nuts? Gauges? Meth kits? Intercooler? Can't think of much else which is fairly generic..

Would've thought most non generic parts would come from Europe for a euro car.. could be wrong though.

Sod that pick stupid cheap computer parts laptops and anything apple iPad or iPod stupid cheap!

Be very careful around picking up electrical equipment & bringing back as USA use 110v, we have 240v, adapters will be required for UK use.

Jake vRS - Me & SWMBO are off to USA end of month, we might just walk past each other without knowing it ( if you are going to New York )

aha, now that would be coincidental! me and SWMBO are staying in the New Yorker for the last few day's of this month and the first week of June :)

any other recomendations?

Some friends are also off to US today so had a browse at some wheel nuts/bolts. Basically the way forward to get significant weight saving on the bolts is to get a 'nut conversion kit'. Looks a bit bodge way of doing it but I've seen some examples on Jetta, Z4 and vx220s (used on regular track sessions apparently). Its also slightly easier to put on when on track days etc as you can pop the wheel on and not need to align the bolts to holes. Prices doesn't cost too much in the US ($40-$200+), maybe worth a look see if you find one of these shops.

cheers dude, that looks a pretty sweet way of doing things, I have always been after some green wheel bolts too!

I'll look into the kit's and have a word with some guys in the US :)

any other suggestions?

Not entirely sure if this would work, Dependant on weight of course! When you've made your purchase nip down to the USPS office and post it to yourself, Just take out any paperwork and post the items on, Declare them as a gift on the custom declaration!

Though you can bring back £390 worth of goods free from duty!

Other goods including perfume and souvenirs

You can bring in other goods worth up to £390 without having to pay tax and/or duty.

If you arrive by private plane or private boat for pleasure purposes, you can only bring in other goods worth up to £270 tax and duty free.

If you bring in any single item worth more than your allowance, you must pay duty and/or tax on the full item value, not just the value above the allowance. You also cannot group individual allowances together to bring in an item worth more than the limit.
