Fabia 1.4 - starting problems in hot weather?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I hope someone out there can help me!!

I have a Fabia 2002, 1.4, Classic, petrol engine. I have sporadically had problems with the car cutting out when starting from cold. When this happens, it fires up as usual, but immediately cuts out after a split second. The only way i can get it to start again is if i put the accelerator pedal to the floor. Otherwise it keeps turning over and over.

One it's fired up, i can drive without a problem and then it doesn't stall.

The only coincidence i have noticed is that this has happened recently, and last year, when my car has been sat on a car park in the sun all day whilst i'm at work. I can't recall having this problem first thing in the morning when i go to work (car always starts first time as normal). It has always been mid afternoon/on my way home.

Last night, coming home i had the stalling problem. This morning the car behaved itself on my way to work, no problems at all. I can't park in the shade unfortunately, as the car park is completely open so im waiting to see if this happens again today.

Does anyone know of any potential problems that could happen as a result of the sun or the heat? It's the only constant factor i can think of for all the times this has happened.

(Just FYI, i had my MAP sensor changed last year when i had 'lumpy idling' and some stalling problems, my temperature sensor was changed a couple or three years ago and last year i had a recurring engine management light issue, which was resolved. I also had a new air/oil filter and plugs and an oil change a couple of months ago.)

If anyone can help i would be very happy indeed!!

Thanks.

It sounds like the "cold start" system isn't activating correctly in high ambiant temps.

If the car has a cable throttle (by no means certain), start by checking that you have a little free play in the cable at the throttle body.

After that try a TB alignment I think.

Which engine is it??? 1.4 8v Mpi, or 1.4 16v???? B)

All electronic throttles on the Furbys, no cable throttles. I would take your car to an independent VW specialist to get hooked up to a computer, you can tell all sorts about what is going on with the engine from there, especially if you've had fault lights at odd times.
