I had a noise on my vRS when the steering wheel was turned any bit right. Sounded like a whirring coming from the front right.

Took it to the garage and they said that the wheel bearing was ever so slightly worn so I got them to replace it When the took it for a test drive the noise is still there and now there saying its either gearbox or differential bearing!

My question is if it was one of these things would turning the wheel an bit right affect it?

Cheers mate, think ill book it into skoda for them to give me a definitive answer. Any ideas on the price of a gearbox rebuild.

Did they check the bearings with the car jacked up as well? When a bearing went on my Leon, it was noisier turning right so both my mechanic and I assumed it was the passenger bearing (as turning right would put that one under more load). However, when he jacked the car up and spun the wheel in the air it was fine, so on the off-chance he spun the drivers wheel and found that it was actually that bearing that failed, even though the symptoms suggested the other side.

The wobble test doesn't work on these cars from what I'm told, the bearings are so highly engineered that the wheel won't rock until the bearing is so damaged it's virtually at the point of falling off, so the most reliable way to test it that I know of is to jack the front up and just spin the wheels as quickly as you can one at a time by hand.

I'd get a second opinion from another garage, but just ask them to spin the wheels and check that both front wheel bearings are definitely fine first. You might be lucky...

Gearbox strip versus replacement gearbox going to be expensive job either way,

best wait until problem is highlighted before making any worrying assumptions, eh.??

The gearbox bearings in my VRS went, luckily i found a vrs breaking on ebay so picked up a second hand box with 40,000 miles (my car was on 100k)for £100

Not very useful for you but just shows cheap replacements can be had
