Columbus Sat Nav - Poor ETA & Route calculation

Featured Replies

I've got a 3-month old Superb Combi Elegance TDi 4x4. Just completed 3000 miles round Europe in two weeks, without a hitch, until I got back to Dover......

It seems that the Satnav can't distinguish between single and dual-carriageway 'A' roads,(unlike my trusty Garmin!), so it thinks that the shortest route, on single-carriageway roads, is faster than a longer distance on 'A' class dual-carriageways. Consequently the routes that it offers are all wrong.

Have I missed something, or is there a serious flaw with the Satnav software.

On a positive note, the car performs as well as its name suggests, and the coverage of the maps/speed of calculation is as good as anything that I've seen - I just wish that I could trust the route guidance system....

Any help would be much appreciated.

Is the Columbus only offering you only one route? It can (and should) offer three alternatives, with an overview map of the routes and mileages displayerd for each alternative. If it's not doing that, it can be set up in the relevant menu on the unit itself. :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I've got it set up to offer me 3 routes, but the software only seems to differentiate between motorways and all other roads when doing its 'fastest route' calculation.

So it might offer me a motorway route, but when it comes to using 'A' roads it doesn't seem to recognise that roads such as the A12 and A14 are largely dual-carriageway, and therefore offer the ability to drive at higher speeds than on single-carriageway 'A' roads, which may offer a more direct route.

As a result the 'fastest route' calculation is screwed.

Obviously, I know the way home from Dover, but if I can't trust the system on routes that I do know, how can I trust it when I'm heading into unknown territory???

The only other options I can think of that are in any way relevant are the "Tolls Roads," etc. in the setup menus, but you seem to have got that covered. I can only remember one occasion where I deviated from the suggested route (due to previous knowledge) and the recalculation resulted in the way I would have preferred being selected. On unknown territory, I don't know what to suggest, sorry.
