Just bought a VRS and aircon fans not working!

Just bought a VRs but the aircon isnt working, on looking the fans dont work when the aircon is on

Anyone know of maybe why these wouldnt run or any fault dio on them?

Press the auto button buddy, both should spin then,

I had to replace my larger fan last week.

It's a known issue.

When the Aircon is in, they should both spin slowly. They have a resistor built in to do this. If they don't come on, or run at high speed on and off, the resistor has failed, and technically you need a new fan.

However, you can get a NIME box which mimics the resistor, saving you from having to buy new fans.

Yeah when you put it into auto the fan should spin and pull air through the condensor, cooling the R134a and turning hot high pressure gas into cold low pressure gas ready to take the heat away from inside the car, this will continue to do this until it get to such a point of when the gas has reached a certain temp by absorbing heat from its surrounds and the sytem desides to switch on the fan to re cool the gas by means of pulling air through the condensor once again.

But the fans dont seam to be working, so i take it its this resistor? and thats on both fans?

It's probably going to be the resistors. Each fan has it's own built in. The fans run at slow spped with the ac on regardless of the gas temperature. Obviously if the gas gets too hot, it will switch the fans to high speed. If the resistors have failed, it will pulse the hgih speed on and off as the gas warms then cools down etc etc.

Try letting the engine get up to temp and see if the fans come on. That would prove whether they are working or not, and also check the fuses on top of the battery.

Ok as far as i can tell the fans dont work at all!

When you put it into auto ie turn it on the fans dont run at all!

Is there a way of overriding the switch to tell if the fan, or the switch is knackered?

Just wondering if it could be the switch!

Not quite right Dannyboy759. Air conditioning systems use R134a which is a refridgerant gas which evaporates very easily and at low temperature. The condenser allows for some of the heat from the high pressure compressed gas to be given off and is condensed into a high pressure liquid. This then passes through an expansion valve where on the other side of which the pressure is much lower, and consequently so is the temperature. Now we have a cold low pressure liquid which flows into the bottom of the evaporator. The second law of thermodynamics states that heat always seek out cold areas. This means that heat is drawn to the evaporator which causes the liquid to evaporate, and so now we have a low pressure gas, which is then drawn back to the compressor via a receiver/dryer which ensures there are no droplets of liquid which could damage the compressor. From here the whole process starts again....

If you put the AC on AUTO, that should override the switch anyway.

How it works, you have a fan controller module which has inputs from the climate control, engine temp (switch in rad), ambient air temp and AC temp iirc. This then connects to the fans and switches them between speeds.

When the engine is hot, the 1st position in the rad switch will activate and send a signal to the fan controller which will put the fans on low speed (via the resistor in the fan). When the engine gets REALLY hot, the second position in the rad switch will activate, send a signal to the controller and it will put on the high speed.

If you put the AC on, the climatronic module will send a signal to the fan controller to put the low speed fan on. If the AC evaporator (rad) gets too hot, the climatronic module will sense this and send a signal to the fan controller to put the high speed on. That is why the fans pulse between off and high speed if the resistors have gone, as the climatronic will sense that the evap is getting too hot, puts the fans on, cools down, puts the fans off, gets hot again etc etc.

So, it may be the fan controller which has died, or the fans themselves, but it's unlikely they have both failed at the same time. Check the fuses on top of the battery. If the resistors go and the fans start pulsing, it draws a lot of current, and the fuse melts.

Just been playing with the car and it looks like the compressor isnt working either, its not engaging the clutch!

And the fans, both of them arent working!

Is there a common replay or fuse that covers the compressor and fans?

Well, the compressor clutch is controlled by the fan controlller (for some reason).

It may be that the refrigerant gas is low, as it won't start the fans or the compressor if this is the case.

Gas is fine, had it check just to rule that out
