Tweeter question

Featured Replies

OK, so I have the Alpine SPR-176A components in the front doors and currently I'm using the standard tweeters. They sound OK but I'm sure a) they won't last running on amp power and B) the proper Alpine ones will sound better.

SO...

How much room is there behind the standard trims to fit aftermarket tweeters? The tweets in this kit are chunky and unless there is a minimum 42mm width and 19mm height, they won't fit at all (just measured with vernier caliper). From a security point of view I'd rather fit them here as they are less of an attraction to potential thieves (knowing all about that as I'm on furby install no. 2 at the mo :thumbdwn: )

If they won't fit inside the standard location, then I have two options - surface mount them or flush fit them. Surface mounting is too obvious / visible and too untidy for my liking. In order to flush fit them I would need a depth of at least 13mm which shouldn't be a problem, but I'd need to cut a hole 47mm wide. If I do this, I also benefit from tweeters that can be angled to get the best sound - which is nice :D

Before I think about doing this, does anybody know the part numbers and prices for the plastic trims covering the standard tweeter locations? Don't want to start hacking holes in them if they cost a packet, as I may at some point need to return them to standard. Or of course if I just **** it up cutting the holes and need to replace them

Little help please!!!

Are the Fabia tweeters mounted in the wing mirror housing? If so, best bet would probably be just to pluck this trim off and size up whether the new tweeters would fit...

My Diamond tweeters fit - you might have to trim the plastic behind that holds the factory tweeters in place but you should be able to get them in there.

Is there any benefit in your collective opinions to flush mounting the tweeters and being able to angle them differently to the standard location?

There could be - it's one of those things you want to "test" first to get the best sound before you fix things into place.

Personally, I'd aim to get them as much in front of you as possible...bit like the aim for home hi-fi...

Most definately. As said above - try it first. I have put mine on the dash now pointing towards me because it sounded better than in the factory location  . Only trouble is thieves seeing them :(

am i right in assume there the type R comps??

if so there the same as mine...they will in no way fit behing where the standard tweets are....and cutting the plastic is a total bitch as its got quite a curved surface aand does require some buliding up with fibreglass or similar if you want to flush mount them....i destroyed one of mine attempping to flush mount them a repalcemnt from the dealer was about

A totally stealth install would have the factory headunit intact though and decent tweeters behind the factory locations..... Something I was very close to doing. True, the headunit is the biggest giveaway. Obvious tweeters would mean that you have gone further with the ICE upgrade though....

I had my complete ICE install ripped out in Bristol becuase of some very obvious Alpine type R speakers mounted on the rear parcel shelf. I'm never doing that again :(

They are the type-r components. I have a very stealthy rear shelf that looks totally standard, but it is a face off stereo. I thought that for cutting the grill I would use a hot knife so that I don't break them. I would like to keep it looking as standard as possible but at the same time the only real reason to change the tweets is to be able to adjust the sound to suit you, so no point in trying to hide them away I guess. I think if the tweeters trims are only about

If you manage it with out haveing to fibreglass anything then well doen if your not prepaired to do that...i wouldnt even try...its well hard and awkward you will also lose all ability to angle the tweeter...and knacker the trims... those type r tweeters are bigger then they look...

Trust me ive tried it!

Joel

Have you got a picture of them in place?

Cheers

Have fitted the tweeters now. Also remedied the poor fitting of the woofers by the guy who was paid to fit them :thumbdwn: lost his patience trying to drill out the rivets so gave up and drilled new holes, and mounted the MDF spacer rings perched about 5mm away from the door skin - great job there, nice one fella... Sorted that out and mounted the tweeters, surface mounted them using the adhesive and screws, damn tight fit getting the door card back on with the tweeter in place but managed it. Also, I bought a couple of rolls of sound deadening felt and stuck some in there as well.

The result?

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

For anybody toying with whether or not to bother with changing the tweeters, the sound difference is probably a lot bigger than you'd think. Those type R tweeters are crystal clear without being OTT with the treble, and the sound is no longer overpowered by the bass from the sub. Definitely worth doing. And with thick felt lining the inner door skins and the card where possible, my doors are now rattle-free!!! :woot:

  • 2 years later...

After 8 months of sounds blasting through the tweeters(the ones hidden behind the panel where the door mirrors are) from my CDX300GT i've managed to blow the driver side tweeter:(

getting a lot of crackles from it (as if the actual cone has split)

does anyone know the size of these tweeters?? been searching the forum for a while but everything seems to be about the main door speaker and neglects the standard tweeter

so if anyone knows the size (and how easy it is to replace them i would be ever grateful for the info

Thanks in advance
