Looking to get my key cut, will a non-coded one work?

Featured Replies

Evening crew!

I've only got 1 key for my Felicia (plus 2 petrol cap keys :dull: ) which is a bit on the bent side, so I figure it's prob worth getting a spare to play it safe.

As I understand it I can have a regular copy done just about anywhere for under £10 but this will only open the doors as the immobiliser won't recognise the non-coded key.

As I'm a cheapskate (and money's tight anyway!) I don't fancy forking out on a coded key and was wondering if I could keep the original key 'near' to the ignition, i.e. on the same keyring as the copy, in order to have the immobiliser work with the non-coded key. Will this work? Just how close does the coded key have to be?

I guess another option would be to get a blank, remove the chip from the original and slap it in the new one, but I don't want to risk damaging the (only) chip I've got.

Also does anyone recommended a cutters for car keys? Never had to do it before.

Any help?

Cheers!

I suppose what i would do is get the key cut anyway, and then experiment with how far away you can keep the key from the barrel and it still starts. Then if u find its a couple of cm, take off the plastic surround and glue it inside so it will always be there. Yes this makes the immobiliser useless, but then u dont risk damaging the chipped key and u will never lose it :)

You have two options as I see it.

1: Remove the chip and permanently fix it to the car near the ring (araldite works a treat). OK, no immobiliser as such, but TBH does it make that much difference? No-one will know that's the case.

2: Get a key cloned. I've never done it but there are mobile locksmiths who can clone your current chipped key. I think the cost is about £30-40.

Last time I heard it wasn't possible to get a "proper" coded key from Skoda - something about them being unable to code it to the car. Certainly my local dealer was useless when I tried getting one for my mum's Felly estate.

i checked a few weeks ago, you can only get new keys as a complete lock set now. coding them is fairly easy

Do you not need the SKC or something? I thought they'd lost them all?

yes you do need the skc, but if you are hard-core you can extract it from the existing immo unit with the right software

Yeah... if!
