Stage 1? K04?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Recently got an octavia vrs tdi.

I've been lurking on the forum recently and have read about stage 1, stage 2 K03 and K04. And a shark remap.

What does this all mean?

Basically I would like to get better fuel economy and performance out of my car but I want to fully understand all options available to myself before I start dishing out more money.

Thanks

The stages are remaps, a stage 1 is just that, no other mods, stage 2 is a remap with a change of intake and downpipe sport/decat. K03 refers to the turbo fitted in the vRS petrol, the K04 is it's big brother which can be found in the Audi S3, Cupra, Edition 30 Golf and some lucky b#######ds have retro fit them in vRS's too.....

The difference is tunablity, max you can expect from a K03 is around 280bhp give or take, that would be stage 2+/3, the same software and mods on a K04 can yield around 340 bhp or more! B)

Shark Performance is a highly recommended tuner, from the vRS diesel you would get up to around 200 bhp, and you will see better mpg, if you drive it sensibly. For more detailed info look here or PM Shark_90

HTH.

Stage 1 is enough for your Tdi, and you will enjoy it much more then the normal car.

Agreed, one point I forgot to mention (although it may not be appicable) if yours has a DPF, the ideal tuning order would be to get Shark to remove it and replace with a delete pipe, then remap.

And there we go again.... DPF. What does this mean?

Also I don't know if my engine is a pd or a cr?

If I get the car remapped will I need to service it more often? I do on average 15k a year.

What are the drawbacks to getting a remap? Will my car likely die earlier?

If I can get better mpg and bhp but not cause any issues elsewhere that I don't see why not.

I presume the cost will pay for itself after x number of miles.

DPF=diesel particulate filter; effectively a soot trap in the exhaust system, designed to accumulate soot particles then burn them off at high temperature, in a process known as regeneration. These can be problematic on PD engined VRS TDI's, hence some choose to remove them.

The VRS changed from PD to CR engines during 2008-you don't say what age yours is? 2007 or older will definitely be PD; 2009 on will be CR.

If it's 08 it could be either.

A remapped engine will not require more frequent servicing. A stage 3 petrol might, I'm not sure, but not on a TDI. Nor will a good remap affect the lifespan of the engine, providing routine servicing is carried out.

Only potential drawback would be the possibility of slightly increased insurance.

Additionally, if you make use of the extra BHP, don't expect wonders MPG-wise :D
