O/T, but I've this notion that on my parents' 3 Honda autos (last and one before that Civics on X and S repectively, and last Jazz on a 57) you need to apply the footbrake before the engine will start.

Yep a bit OT ( :giggle: ). Yeh, true on auto's you normally put your foot on the brake before starting. However her 2001 Civic 1.6 Auto will start as long as it's in Park. You then have to apply the brake to select a gear.
