Oil Pickup pipe -ARRRGGGHHH! Help please?

Featured Replies

So all the bits to do oil change and pickup pipe.

All went well this afternoon until I was putting one of the sump bolts back in. The four bolts recessed near the flywheel.

One fell down.

Where I haven't a clue. Its not on the floor, so figured must be just in the recess.

Nope nothing can be seen or found.

So option One is I will have to drop the sump again (not happy at this option)

worse case is whether it's possible for it to drop down by the gap between the flywheel and clutch housing, which means gearbox off job (even worse to option one)

Obviously now a bit pi55ed!

any suggestions gratefully received

Stef

NB Old oil pickup was 75% blocked with crud.

is there space to poke around with one of those telescopic magnet tools ?

+1 for that.

If you have dropped a bolt it will not go in the sump as that is enclosed, it is more likely to drop in the flywheel recess I am sorry to say as i did the same. But my bolt was resting on the flywheel itself, so with a torch and a magnetic tool i got it out.

good luck

Thanks. I am just concerned that the gap between the flywheel ans housing is big enough for the bolt to fall through.

Annoying as its ready to fill with oil. I'm leavibg unfilled on ramps until I find it.

Lets hope it is not dropped down to gearbox housing. You may still be able to scrap a magentic tool up to where to get it out if the magnet is strong enough.

i still think it will be resting where you can get at it. Need to look very closely to see it.

First thing I'd be concerned with is unless you have ALL the bolts torqued correctly within the 10 minute or so window of applying the special sump sealant, it won't have spread out from the bead and sealed properly so you'll have to remove the sump and re-do it anyhow?

If you are happy with the sealant, I use an LED pen torch and a thin magnet on a stick to get it from where it sits usually between the holes in the alloy 'webbing' of the sump, you do have to find it. I fit them wiht a long flexi head allen key as this gets them in easier without dropping out, then use a 1/4 drive 10mm on a wobble long extension to apply tightening torque.

Well done for doing the job before your engine is screwed, I see 1 sometimes 2 a week killed dragged in because of pickup blockage.

Greg.

Thanks again for the support.

Will get a flexible magnetic finder tomorrow. Fortunately I can manage a few days while it's on ramps.

The bolts were all torqued as soon as possible in "cross sequence". I left the two ******* recessed ones till the end as knew they would be tricky.

That's exactly where it'll be. It you put a finger up either side of the webbing you can just feel it. Try and tip it so it is standing on its head and put a noose of fishing line over it.

With the VAG sealant, I would want the time to be less than 5 minutes, from the time I start the bead, until the bolts are tight. The surface cures quite quickly and loses its adhesive properties. Because of the number of bolts, I use a power screwdriver to run them up and then torque them by hand.

Hi. All done tonight. It had dropped where expected, managed to just get a light to it. So with a thin blade to dislodge it and a Rolson fleximag torch from Maplins for a fiver all sorted.

put bolt back in taped to the hex key for safety.

Flexi mag highly recommended:

Piccy of old oil pickup pipe (75K miles):

OilPickup800.jpg

I feel this really ought to be standard service item replacement at about 50K miles

I think it should get replaced at earlier intervals, especially if regular oil changes are missed. I change oil every 4k mikes

Must change mine soon when it has an oil change.

What is the cost of the oil pick up pipe out of interest.

I think it's about £12 - £15 according to my mate who did his on Seat Leon Cupra R
