Tomtom PoI software

Featured Replies

Which software do fellow TomTom v.3 users use as Point of Interest alerters? CheckPOInt? GPS Assist? POI-Warner?

Unfortunately, I could rather do with it for a journey tomorrow so I don't have time to properly evaluate the different packages.

I'm assuming you want to use the speed camera POI database, in which case i use CheckPOInt, works well. As I've always got my Road Angel on too the two appear to agree with each other most of the time although the camera POI appears to have more locations on it than actually exist in real life.

I've had a few occasions where CheckPOInt is giving off a warning and the Angel is quiet and there is nothing on the road. So I think it boils down to how thorough the POI database is rather then the software. Hope that helps

CheckPOInt here, and use v2 not v3, for some reason v3 is slow and is reported to be a bit flaky besides.

You could always move to the Palm platform, then you won't need any extra software, as V4.4 has POI alert built in!

It works really well for me -I believe that the Pocketgps databse has about 2000 of the 3500 cameras in it.

I use CheckPOInt, and sometimes get false warnings as it works by detecting POIs within a user-selectable "sector". This means it picks up ones on the other side of dual carriageways, for example.

A classic example of this is on the A1(M) near Baldock, where CheckPOInt insists on reporting a camera that is on a road running underneath the motorway. There are also some roadworks cameras that are listed that are no longer there. Next time I find one of these I'll flag it for deletion (I added a new fixed camera to the database on Monday). Any of these systems are only as good as the data that people supply to them, but in any case it's better than nothing!
