New vRS bought - how should it drive?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

new member (post wise anyway), just bought an 02 plate, black vRS with 70k on the clock. As far as I'm aware the car is completely standard,

but I'm concerned that I might have some problems. I previously drove an A4 2.8 Quattro so it could be that I'm just used to that, or its my driving style.

Firstly, what sort of milage do folks normally get out of a tank of petrol? I had 3 full tanks now on a variety of roads, and I'm getting just over 300 miles per tank. Is this normal? I'm not driving very hard, I'd be worried if this was the best it can do economy wise....

Secondly, the car really isn't as quick as I was expecting it to be, ok, I've come from a 2.8 4wd, but still I'm sure it should feel quicker than it does. When I accelerate hard I get a big turbo lag and notice a lot of boost surging. Is this normal?

The car was serviced by skoda back in Feb, only 2K miles ago. I've already taken it to my usual VAG specialist garage and they read it for fault codes and the only one that came up was a faulty temp sensor, which they replaced. I've got no lights on the dash and the car seems in very good condition generally apart from needing some new brakes in the near future.

Any ideas? Dirty throttle body? MAF? Coil pack? Boost leak?

Cheers in advance

Wayne

They do only do about 300 miles to a tank,

You do have to drive them and keep them reving to get the most out of them

Fuel wise - Mine does 360 miles to a tank usually.

Mine usually hits 280-290 then the light comes on, which suggests there's about another 50 miles in the tank.

What fuel you using? Only reason i ask is because i too have recently purchased a vRS and noticed in the skoda book and fuel cap cover flappy thingy it says use 98ron. Im so technical when im tired.

Might be worth keeping an eye on my thread - 3rd gear - no overtaking power. We may be having the same problem :)

From 40 litres it reckons I will be getting 320 miles out of it. From the last tank of petrol I had I drove...

Sunday - My house, ringwood, hampreston, bournemouth, castlepoint then home

Monday - Girl friends and back

Tuesday - day off

Wednesday - my house, matchams, my house

Thursday - work

Friday - home, Trowbridge, home

Saturday - Work

Sunday - My house, golf, Beaulieu motor museum, home

Monday - day off

Tuesday - My house, girlfriends, poole, towerpark, home, girlfriends house and home.

Fill up.

managed 223.1 miles with some rather aggressive and uneconomical driving. So that is rather bad MPG lol. 25.28 average MPG. Wish I hadn't worked that out now lol. Going to make this next tank last two weeks, that is the goal!

I have read alot of people think the vRS isn't that quick. I know I came from Rover 25 so anything to me feels fast but I have never felt like the car has been underpowered at all. I don't wan't to sound like a ****, but I have played around with rather rappid cars before and I have never been at a loss/needing more.

I know its only at 70k but maybe it hasn't had a good life up til now? Maybe it needs a good old service? As you said, clean the throttle body or a few new parts to breath some life in to it. Try a few of the basic things see if that helps?

Do you have ASR off when you are driving?

As standard they are not very quick IMO. However a remap totally changes this and gives the engine bags of power. Its worth doing.

+1, and make sure you have a RARB fitted as the handling is also pretty poor standard, but not bad at all once RARB in place.

That's another good one.

I thought the same after coming from a Corrado g60. But as said I had a stage 1 custom code remap and it made the car come alive. Now working on getting the bits together to do a stage 2 

Cool. Thanks for the comments guys. I've actually had a couple of trips on the M25 recently and I don't think the MPG is that bad, I saw 41mpg average on the trip comp at one point, the Audi never did more than 26mpg even if you drove it like a nun!

Definately up for a remap, seems to be quite a lot of options... AMD, REVO, Jabba, Shark etc. etc. whats the general view amongst the masses for a stage 1 set up?

Just opened up Pandora's box with that question. ;) lol. I am going to go R-tech once petrol prices stop rising so drastically and when I sort out my handeling issues. I am going with them mainly because of the price.

Having had VW's and Audi's for years I tend to lean towards AMD or Jabba as I've used them in the past, but Revo seems pretty common. Not heard of Shark before I came on this forum. Whats the deal with the RARB? Cost? Supplier? Are these still imported?

Whiteline do them, relatively cheap, fixed or adjustable < £200, there other other options that are dearer and thicker (e.g. Neuspeed). Just do a google search and you will find whiteline stockists and yes i think Whiteline are imported.

With regards to the RARB.... I have heard they are a bitch to install. Is this true and if so why?

Not sure about that. The whiteline adjustable took me less than 1 hour to fit, no more than 6 bolts from memory, and believe me i am pretty slow when i do any DIY work on my car. :smirk:

Thats not too bad then. Where did you get yours from? Did you get all the bits or did you have to buy anything extra?
