YETI 1.2TSI 1000 mile review

Featured Replies

After receiving delivery of my new 1.2TSI SE spec Yeti I thought I should give a small review into first impressions of the car. First of all I am blown away by the 1.2 TSI engine. I cannot believe it is a 1.2 engine as the power is unbelievable. Second gear shove is unbelievable. Drivability is amazing from tootling round town to cruising on the motorway. 2500rpm at 70mph on the motorway. I get up to 80mpg quickly and smoothly and the engine NEVER feels stressed. I have come from owning a 1.6TDI 105 2009 Golf and they are like chalk and cheese. The 1.2TSI is much quicker, smoother and quieter without a doubt. So if anyone was thinking of spending an extra grand on the 1.6TDI don't bother!! I was reading the Autocar long term test of their 1.2TSI Yeti and just cannot believe their impression. They say they got low to mid 30 mpg at best whereas I am getting 40mpg plus all of the time and thats not hanging about. My wife commutes to Kidsgrove to Stafford and back and gets 48mpg return!! I only used to get 50mpg out of the 1.6TDI! They also commented that the Yeti engine felt stressed and I find this very hard to believe. Maybe its because they are used to driving sports cars with heavy right foots?? but the Yeti never feels stressed IMO certainly not in comparison to the 1.6TDI.

Anyway that is my impression of the 1.2TSI Yeti and I hope it helps people with their decision when purchasing a new Yeti.

Won't affect any decision about buying the 1.2 - 24 hours from now I shall be at the dealer's sorting out the paperwork etc. to collect mine. Wonderful timing on your part in posting your thoughts etc., I think the Yeti has the potential to be the best decision I've ever made regarding vehicle purchase

I'm looking forward to picking mine up in August /September. My impression from test driving the 1.2 was that it was more than up to the job of pulling the Yeti about but was slightly concerned when I read the Autocar report.

I have seen a lot of posts about high oil usage during the first few thousand miles and this seems to be down to the use of fully synthetic oil and also seems to be worse if you stick to the advised run in procedure. Did you notice this and did you stick to the advice for running the car in?

Nice wee review btw

I think you are right there. But also remember that specific report in Autocar was written by their photographer. So he was lugging around LOTS of very heavy photographic equipment. So he has to rush from scenic location to scenic location with all his gear trying to keep up with the latest Ferrari et al as they blast around Wales or somewhere. So no wonder they found it underpowered! For anyone else with only one or two cars (thus fewer comparison to fast cars) doing normal driving it is a brilliant car/engine. Enjoy.

i reg get high 40's low 50's mpg...and i dont hang around..ive now done 10,000 miles and apart from high oil comsumption upto 8000 miles its been a great car...more than enough power, comfy for long distance, brilliant in bad winter( snow) as all my other skoda's were...cant fault it..

Although mine is only 2.5 weeks old I totally agree with your comments regarding the 'little' 1.2TSi. It is an amazing unit that punches well above its weight and it is so difficult to believe its cubic capacity bearing in mind that the Yeti is far from petite. Mine has the DSG transmission and it is a little early to comment on mpg but it appears easily to be in the mid forties although a fairly restrained right peg is being used at the moment. I came from a 1.4 TSi Octy and this little 1.2 is certainly no disappointment. Before ordering the Yeti I was concerned about how the 1.2 TSi would cope with it's bulk and hoping that a 1.4 TSi DSG would become available. Looking back now I believe if it had, it would be superfluous plus I would never have realised just how good the 'little un' really is. Never, never be put off by the 1.2 TSi's cubic capacity, its an amazing and refined little unit.

We've driven ours over both long and short distances and in the 3000 or so miles so far it has used no oil. We didn't go particularly gently or thrash it, but drove it in our normal way from day 1. The combination of the DSG and 1.2 is amazing, can't really fault the car, doesn't feel underpowered at all, and is far nippier than our Golf 1.6 diesel DSG we had before. You won't be disappointed.
