My Superb Elegance 4X4 170 - 2 week review

Featured Replies

That's what I suspect too, but with the issues realised last winter - certainly with supplies here in the UK, I thought they might just have begun production earlier this year :)

Will continue to keep an eye out.

Give me a nudge when they start to appear again as I might be looking for a second set myself, ideally Nokian WR G2's again.

It seems a long way from winter at the moment but I remember skidding down a hill in my Honda and those black alloys whilst, sorry Philpix, not a thing of beauty, will store easily enough in my garage with the cheap Avons. All for two months or so. But, God, that hill and no control....

Hey, no offence, it's only a wheel.

I just wanted a set to shod with decent winter tyres.

Honestly you will not believe the difference the tyres make especially with 4x4.

Will do. Where did you go for them last time - Camskill?

No, I got them from mytyres.

Saville's quoted me 37-38 ish quid a wheel for new steelies when I asked.

A local tyre place to me has (maybe had) a huge stock of steelies round the back from people who have bought alloy and tyre sets off them. £5 a corner.

Just some alternative suggestions for those on a budget.

Hi,

My Skoda Dealer offered me 4 new steel wheels for £192 (I hope including VAT).... I couldn't help but laugh! Not got any yet but if at a good price I could be tempted.

Not found the 'username change' button yet then? ;)

I can point you in the direction of 4 new 5x112 VAG 16" steel wheels for £80, if that's any help? :)

Obviously they'd need tyres sourcing in addition, but I thought that was a decent price.

That button is very elusive... if I change now I fear that I would disappoint a number of those who now know/talk to me on here. I'd have to introduce myself all over again... LOL

That price sounds much more "normal" (infact a pretty good price actually! Thanks) - you probably know better than me if they are suitable, so I guess they are.

I will take you up on them! I hope to be at the next NW meet but I'll be late, could you bring them?? or where do I need to go?

Thanks

Stef

They're not mine, I just saw an advert. I'll drop you a PM.

Since this thread has gone winter tyres ...

Are you comfortable using 18 inch rims on winter tyres?

My Skoda dealer recommend not over 16 inch due to the tyres ground pressure on my Superb and tracking. I also asked a tyre dealer the same, and he stated likewise.

I'd like 17 inch winter, but guess I'm eventually going to rank advised security higher than looks.

Hey, Mr. Laaban - same country and same model as me :)

I have my winter tyres (Continental WinterContact without spikes) mounted on 17" Trifid alloys - very comfortable, superb ( :giggle: ) grip and no problems at all.

Send me a message if you want to discuss the subject further - in norwegian :D

I'd not go 18" on winters due to the width and profile required. You'd be better off with 16" if you have choice.

Not to mention the cost of 18" winter specific rubber. I would go 16" myself, were it not for the already spare set of 17" wheels I have.

sorry, but  , we've drifted (no pun intended) into another winter tyre related thread?!

You've got 4x4, do as i did, keep the car looking good, stick 18" rims and rubber on, and you'll have no issue what so ever - Phil and Myself both ran 18" rims and winter tyres last year, we're both "up north" where we got hit hard, and never had any issue with traction. - 16" Steel wheels are suggested lots, but, urr, YACK!

Wider tyres means you "should" sit ON TOP of the snow easier, skinnier tyres, would cut through.

What i mean to say is, you pays your money, you takes your choice...

Alright, thanks for your input. I see your points and I will compromise with you all and go for 17" :giggle:

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi All,

I've now had her for almost two weeks, thought I would update everyone on my view after the long wait.

Firstly I can honestly say I really don't miss my BMW at all, the 2.0 170 Diesel is an absolute cracker of an engine, the torque is more then enough (not quite the 400nm I used to have) but it's not noticeable, the 4 wheel drive grips lovely and I can now feel it when I go round a corner quite hard with hardly any body roll.

It's really funny but I don't feel like I'm driving a large car at all, it feels like a Golf when you are in side.

Build quality is great and the seats are really comfortable, had a big thumbs up from the passengers that have been in the back. With comments suggesting it's like a limo :giggle: I really like Aqua Blue and glad I chose it, haven't seen another one on the road in that colour yet.

I have it connect to my Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone by Bluetooh for music and phone, it works without any issues. Satnav works fine for me and it even faster then my previous phone related SatNav (this was already fast enough)

One thing I have noticed it the auto wipers and headlights aren't as good as my BMW, the lights swicth on then fail to turn off occasionally. The auto wipers go really fast sometimes even when on the least sensitive setting and when it's hardly raining...

Now the reason I got it.. the dog loves it, so much that within 10 minutes of introducing her to the boot for a drive to the local Husky?malamute club she decided to chew off the cover for 12v socket in the boot :@

All in all she loves it though and so do I, All in all this is probably the best all round car I have ever owned!!!!!

For the ultimate thrill I will shortly be booking myself in at Thruxton to drive the Ferrari 458

The auto wipe sensitivity can be adjusted. Check the manual. As for the lights, the delay turning off is for a reason. The Xenons don't like being switched on and off quickly. The delay is to prolong the life of them.

Phil
