Replacing my Superb 1.9Tdi...but with what?

Featured Replies

Depends what you want.

I am not particularly interested in speed but am interested in low road tax and high fuel economy/green issues.

You'll not be surprised to hear I ordered a Greenline estate!

One month since order and two until I might hear about a delivery date. Still, that gives me more time to save up a bit so there's less on the HP!

Seven weeks and 3500 miles after delivery my 1.6CR is loosening up nicely. Overall consumption on mix of urban and dual caraigeway is 54mpg. Last night I had to use the loud pedal in third gear to accelrate- power with smooth delivery and felt much faster than you would expected from quoted 0-62 times. was so surprused I slowed down much slower than I needed for the next bend just so I could do it again. Very nice.

the BIK and consumption form me are a no brainer. in a 30 mile A road journey once you have hit traffic speed any additional power is wasted fueld consumption. IN reality how often will you notice 2.5 seconds faster to 60mph?- in town there is always another set of traffic lights to slow everyone down, out of town the sppedn limit is there.

The space toys etc are the same no matter which engine you get, so why through good money away at the tax man?

Thanks for your advise. In reality, I could probably live with a Greenline, however, SWMBO said the ride was noticeably harder than our current Superb.

Did you make a conscious decision to choose a 1.6 CR S, rather than a 1.6 CR greenline? The BIK tax band is 5% higher on the non-Greenline 1.6 CR, while the average economy is only a couple of mpg better than the 140 CR.

By the way, I note that the June brochure has deleted chrome window surrounds and front seat lumbar supports, both of which were supplied as standard on my current Superb.

To me it is more about in-gear flexibility, such as 40-60 in 4th, to get past that lumbering lorry or Aunt Gladys in her Metro Vanden Plas. I would have to work the 1.6 so hard that it would not be much more economical than the relatively effortless drive in the 2.0 and would be hard work all day long. It all depends how much time you spend behind the wheel and whether you like to cruise at 60, with a clear road ahead, or are happy to play Follow the Leader. Yesterday, due to a road closure and diversion, I was running late for a meeting. My current Mondeo 2.0 163 TDCi was able to get me past the caravans and lorries swiftly and safely and on to my destination in time. Horses for courses.

I had to place order last October to ensure delivery in April, so Greenline wasnt an option. I did try to order one but had to settle for S. BIK is higher than greenline, but lower than 2.0CR, also road tax is lower which I pay for under our scheme. over the life of the car the difference in fuel consuption also adds up. Also employer introduced a new policy of max CO2 of 150g/km so tried to reduce the CO2 to appease the operations director.

My MY11 Superb doesnt have either chrome window surround or lumbar support.

My MY11 Superb doesn't have either chrome window surround or lumbar support.

Thanks, that's what I thought.

It is disappointing that chrome window surrounds are no longer standard on S models. My S has them and it really makes a visual difference, particularly when in conjunction with a dark colour such as Rosso Brunello.

I can understand the reason for specification reductions (cost saving), but it seems the S model has been unfairly targeted, rather than all trim levels. For example, S trim no longer comes with the following as standard:-

Full size steel spare wheel

Chrome window surrounds

Driver & passenger seat lumbar support

Velo, you already know my thoughts on this, and as FarmerJim has said I think the flexibility & refinement of the 2.0 140 will be better. The ride is better as SWMBO can testify plus the ingear times will give you the performance gap you want should you need it.

Go for the "S" then spec it up with what you want like cruise (£220), steel spare wheel (£85) etc.

The spare wheel has been deleted from all of the models / spec's not just the S - you can't even order a Greenline with a spare as an option.

Correct. A fair point. I would however, add, that my main dealer quoted approx £125.00 (inc VAT) to supply a 7 X 16 steel wheel, 205/55/16 tyre, jack and brace and polystyrene boot well insert.

For those with 17" wheels, a space saver wheel is available as a factory option.

Thanks to all those who have taken the time to contribute to this thread. I think I've whittled my alternatives down to the following:-

1) Superb 1.6 CR SE Greenline Estate (Steel Grey/Amethyst,plus heated nozzles, ADRVM, headlight washers, retractable shelf & rear side sunblinds)

2) Superb 2.0 CR 140 SE Twindoor (Pacific blue, as metallic over monthly budget, but including heated nozzles & rear side sunblinds)

3) Superb 2.0 CR S Twindoor or Estate (Steel Grey/Amethyst, but with cruise, Maxidot, Bolero, full size spare wheel, leather 4 spoke steering wheel and rear side sunblinds)

I have altered my opinion in favour of the Estate, purely because it does look more cohesive than the Twindoor, despite not offering much additional practicality over the versatile Twindoor. I also fancy an Estate as I currently have a Twindoor.

It is a shame Mocha is being deleted in August, while Storm Blue has been deleted with immediate effect. These two colours would have been my preference.

For an economy model, the Greenline's lowered suspension may well improve aerodynamics, while, from my test drive I discovered you could carry about 5mph more into bends/roundabouts than in my more softly sprung Twindoor S. That said, the 140 CR will have more torque to pull the car out of bends.

Using Hypermiling techniques driving a 140 CR, it would be interesting to see if the 56.2 mpg average of my remapped 1.9Tdi could be improved.

My SE 140PD (remapped to 180) will be replaced by a Greenline Elegance (and remapped) as the tax on Company cars is now getting very expensive!

Yes, I am mindful of the same.

Doing some calulations, a 140 CR would cost me £36.00 a month more in fuel and in BIK tax than my existing 1.9Tdi. This is based on 82,500 miles and 2.5 years. A Superb Greenline for the same period would be almost £21.00 a month LESS than my current Superb.

Opting for a 140 CR might seem a good idea for the extra mid range power. however, an additional cost of £1,080 (30 months) from my own pocket looks less attractive, especially when a Greenline would save me £630.

Glad I'm not the only one prepared to consider having a Greenline II remapped; at least when this is physically possible.

Surely the whole point of buying a Greenline is because of the fuel economy.

Won't remapping the engine change that?

Not necessarily. If the driver of the remapped car drives sensibly, he/she will require less throttle to achieve the same speeds as with the original (unmapped) vehicle. This is how I have bettered my remapped Superb 1.9Tdi's published combined economy of 49.6mpg by 13.83% (currently averaging 56.46mpg).

my wife had a new 320d saloon but has just changed jobs.she had loads of cars to choose from but has ordered a superb elegance hatch 2.0 cr 140. she hated her bmw. lack of room for rear passengers and boot not very versatile. we also looked at octavia vrs cr 170 but opted for superb because better spec and more room. we did look at 1.6 cr but when car fully loaded it does tend to struggle a little. good though if your atching the pennies

Why wouldn't it be physically possible? Direct OBD-port remapping might still be an issue with ECU encyption, but talk to Shark Performance if you want more info.

I've tried to speak to Shark Performance, but we keep missing one another. To date, I've not seen anyone advertising 1.6Tdi remaps, including the large market players. I think is due to the encrytpted nature of the ECU.

Ah OK. Well I'm sure you'll get something sorted with Ben then. To my knowledge, the 1.6CR makes use of the same encryption systems as the latest 2.0CR. But this would mean 'bench' remapping would still be an option.

Hope you get sorted emoticon-0148-yes.gif
