Octavia 2 climatronic not cooling

Featured Replies

Hello, I am a newbie to this forum, hope you can give me some help. My 2006 Octavia TDI’s climatronic failed to produce any cold air. I took it to my only local dealer (I live on an island and all VAG group has a common dealer). They re-gassed it, checked for leaks and but it still didn’t work. I read forum and took the car back for them to check the problem, I was told I needed a new compressor/dryer, despite having been told that no faults were found on the first occasion. I tried the advice from the forum and indications on the climatronic display is that the compressor is running at full speed. I would appear that no-one has even lifted off the engine cover to look at the compressor or check any electrics. They tell me it is a known fault and that there are metal filings in the system and that is why I need a new compressor and dryer but they can’t explain what they did to check the problem. I accept that I may need to spend £1200 on a new compressor but only if I really need one. Has anyone else heard of this “metal filing†problem? Any help gratefully received.

When a compressor eats itself it is common for the bits to be distributed thoughout the system.

The way to test the compressor it to measure the low and high side pressures. Any indy or a/c sprecialist can hook up a manifold gauge set to the car and measure these pressures.

If it is the compressor, then the system will have to be flushed to remove the bits from the compressor.

They should replace the drier whenever they open the system and I would also suggest that the TXV is replaced too as it can't be flushed. Make sure all the o-rings are replaced (should happen when they flush the system).

I know you probably don't have too much choice on Jersey, but you should be able to find an a/c specialist who can do the job for a lot less money. If you are lucky it maybe something like a plugged TXV/drier or a problem with the compressor valve.
