Manual door locking problem - opens with anything....

Featured Replies

i've got a 1.9 sdi classic with manaul door locks.

Im 100% sure i locked all my car doors last night, but when i came out this morning the door was open and the ash tray flap was open and the ash tray was pulled out.... but nothing was damaged or stolen...

on closer inspection the door lock opens with just about anything, i tried a fiat punto car key in the lock abit, turned.. and it opend! the punto key is completely different aswell...

So, without having to change all the locks on the car or having 2 different keys, is there a solution?

Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem with my old Polo.

The lock mechanism was jammed up with crud that had built up over the years, meaning that the pins in the barrell were stuck in the unlock position, so all it required was something to turn the barrell and the car would unlock.

You should be able to take the handle out of the door, then remove the lock barrell. This can then be taken apart and cleaned up with some alcohol or similar, One it's been cleaned, the pins should now drop back down when the key is removed meaning the barrell will now not turn without the correct key.

Sounds like someone has broken the lock cylinder getting into your car. A dealer can order you a lock cylinder that matches your existing key.

I'll try cleaning it out tomorrow or later on.

Any idea on the price of a new lock from the dealer that matches my key?

IIRC, it was about £50 retail incl VAT

IIRC, it was about £50 retail incl VAT

Just incase sombody does a search and wants an up to date price my recipt shoes the following.

Chassis lock - £53.63

Total goods - £53.63

Total Vat - £10.73

Total Due - £64.36

But it was about £65 down the ****ter because i collected the lock today and it doesnt fit my key, so the locks must have been changed on the car at one point anyway.

All the locks could have been changed and the car coded to the new keys.

The other possibility is that they made a mistake with the chassis number when they ordered the new lock. Give them a call and ASK THEM TO GIVE YOU the chassis number they used when placing the order.
