Best coilovers for 15 - 20k pa daily driver?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've just picked up an immaculate 1 owner from new 05 plate Vrs yesterday that I'm going to be using for work and doing around 15 to 20k miles per year in over the next 2 years.

The reason I want coilovers is because I want to be able to dial the ride height to exactly where I want it. It's possible that I might do the odd track session, but not very likely so my main objective is a nicely drivable road car that's not rock hard on the road but not bouncy either.

What's likely to best suit my needs as I've read that the weitecs can be hard and the FK highsports can be bouncy? I don't want to spend a fortune either, maybe £450 new or around £300 for good condition second hand.

I'm sure there's loads of real world experience on here, so please post your suggestions and help me out : )

Many thanks in advance

Think your going to have problems finding something that does all of that lol. In terms of best kit, KW V1`s are just above you budget, but they are excellent, very stiff but corners great and arnt crashy over bumps.

Having come from an Audi A2 tdi sport, possibly the hardest, crashiest (is that a word?) standard set up on any small car, I don't mind firm ( or very firm) as long as it's not to the point where it's going to throw the car off the road into a hedge on some of Devons B roads!

So firm is fine, as long as it's not crashy and has good rebound control

Am I expecting too much,

The standard vrs is almost soft compared to the A2!

Lol, in that case i`m sure you`ll find a kit to suite your needs. As before, KW V1`s are excellent, more composed than my old eibach coilovers. They are around £500 but if you can stretch to them well worth it.

KW, Weitec, AP - all the same really, obviously the KW are the best. Bit like going Audi, VW, Skoda, Seat in terms of pricing and quality.

I am growing to hate my AP's, they squeak like crazy. It's an odd sound, like I'm driving over a flock of geese. A bit of research shows a few people have found the same. Do the Weitecs/KW's do the same? :S

Have you cut your bump-stops down? Cutting mine cured the noise on my car.

I cut down the rears, but not the front...worth a try?

Nothing wrong with weitec - no noises other than my exhaust hitting the RARB at every possible opportunity. My own fault for running low. Time for a mufflerectomy me thinks ;)

We took my mates to a garage to get the exhaust raised abit lol

Thanks for the info, that's great

So KW's should be my number one choice at around £500, but for my needs the weitec or AP's would probably be ok?

I'm pretty much going to fit and forget, don't intend to be winding them up and down. I'd happily use shocks and springs, but doubt I'd be totally happy with the drop.

Most of the miles will be sat on the motorway, hence the desire to avoid something rock solid!

It's more about the look, but I need whatever I fit to be up to the job and good enough quality to last, maybe I should just bite the bullet and go with the KW's

Theres a great idea.

If your going to be adjusting the height you want kw v1 inox (stainless steel)

The geese noise in the AP's is due to the spring on the front touching every now and then at low speeds. If you put some plastic tubing from KW on the coils they stop the noise.

I have KW V2's and they are stiffer then V! but not by alot and as said kw's are not crashy but stiff. I Wouldnt have anything else now

Bit of silicone hose wrapped round the rear beam stops that, thats what i did to mine :p

yeah tried that as a temp fix - lasted a few days :D As I've said to you before mate, I am surprised more people haven't suffered from this - we're not the only peeps running a jabba RARB and AP/Weitec/KW coilovers.....

Full straight through system coming soon B) - that'll sort it.

I had kw v1's for ages

No squeks what so ever

As mentioned the KW and Weitec are both popular choices and good for everyday roade use.
