Shark Stage 1 for VRS TSI

Featured Replies

I'm planning to slide into the group buy for a Shark remap in the next day or two, but first I have a few questions for those members already running stage 1 on the latest Octy VRS TSI. Please help guys.

Firstly, I know it's supposed to be a 50 bhp increase but what does this mean in real world performance? I've had mine for fourteen months now. Will this reinvigorate our relationship!

These days when you need a mortgage to fill the tank, what will happen to my fuel consumption? It's started to improve recently due to a combination of more miles and Shell fuel. I know if I hoon around it will be hit, but I generally drive fairly smoothly unless I'm in a hurry. Will I still see a fall and by what sort of mpg?

Along similar lines, will I need to run on super unleaded or can I continue to run ordinary unleaded fuel? Insurance wise I've got a decent premium at the moment- middle aged, full bonus, no convictions through Highway via Chris Knott. Big rise likely or no?

Finally, how do I join Freedom and access the discounts there?

Thanks in anticipation of some answers - Jon

A stage 1 will transform your car totally I guarantee you won't be disappointed. It will probably give you slightly better mpg if you drive normally but you tend to want to exploit the additional power once you have it. I think you are ok with 95 on stage 1 but I wouldn't use anything other than shell v power.

How will it transform the car? Does put you in your seat more cause at the moment it only does that in 2nd gear really. I understand it will change the car by giving more torque but when I put my foot down in 5th or 6th the dsg changes down to the appropriate gear anyway. I guess it will still change down to the same gear say at 50mph to 3rd gear but it will just pull harder. Is that about right?

Its like changing Susan Boyle to Kate Middleton.

Will the remap cause the engine or exhaust to give a meatier sound?

No. Maybe your turbo will be a bit more audible. For meatier sound, you need to intervene in the exhaust.

I think I'm over Ms. Boyle now and ready to move on but I'd still like some concrete information on her replacement and whether she comes across on half a diet coke or requires a decent bottle of wine.

I now know which cars I will be able to keep up with, but I have no idea of real world performance or mpg figures with the remap. There is also no real clarity over whether I would need to use super unleaded.

However, I do know how to join Freedom now thanks to Wardy. I don't have a paypal account so I'll be whacking a cheque in the post this week.

Typically, a remap would be expecting to see Super Unleaded, in order to make maximum performance. It could be that the map can be tailored if you're adamant that you want to use 95 (understandable given petrol prices). Just that you won't make the same power (you can't have your cake, and eat it ;))

Something to talk through with Ben that one.

In the interests of objectivity, other remaps are available lol

Well seeing as the name of the mapping provider is named in the thread title by the OP, I didn't really think that was worth pointing out ;)

If it was a general question about remaps in general, I'd agree....

True but shark has the better reviews. After a year of debating who to go with and reading a serious amounts of posts on multiple forums.

Yes but the comments I made above to the op were based on my experience of a different map provider hence worth pointing out that there are others out there. I'm not interested in whose map provider gets the best reviews, we all pay our money and take our chances.

Fair enough Jonno.

Anyone out there with a shark stage 1 on a TSI that can talk from experience?

I've a 2011 TSi Vrs. I put a shark stage 1 on at ~1k miles or something like that (can't remember would need to check the car's folder).

Changes:

  • Smoother. The factory mapping is smooth, but after the remap you realise there was a slight thump of torque around 2k rpm. The smooth power makes it nicer to drive, it feels better.
  • Wastegate rattle is gone. That annoying raspy noise through the exhaust, caused by the wastegate rattling, is gone - because the wastegate doesn't sit open wasting boost pressure now.
  • Noticeably stronger low end and mid-range. The biggest difference for me is 1500rpm-3500rpm. Coupled with the smoothed out delivery, it's a nice place to be! When you do boot it right round the clock, it pulls strongly for longer
  • Fuel economy is down around town and up on the motorway. Overall my fuel economy hasn't really changed although i reckon if i didn't use the midrange all the time about town, and did some more motorway miles, it'd be ~4-5 mpg up. Either way, it's a bonus because i'd have been fine with a 5mpg drop.

Excellent post mute

Yep, exactly what I was after. I think that clinches it.

Thanks Mute.

And just a small comment on the fuel issue, its not a problem at all to tweak your map to better suit 95RON fuel.

Glad it helps :)

Nicky, just spotted your question about the gears. It pulls in 3rd like it did in 2nd before, tend to use 3rd for dragging off down the road now - it's rapid and the engine's quiet, doesn't draw attention like 5k rpm in 2nd does :giggle:

Great fun for just kind of walking past much more expensive machinery as if you're not trying :giggle: childish but fun.

Excellent! My favourite is leaving audis as a few of them think they own the road and get right up your rear which I hate. Thanks again for the post mute

Hi Shark.

Presumably running 95 will blunt the performance of the remap somewhat? If it's set for 98, presumably it will still run reasonably well on 95?

Mute- are you running V power like everyone else?
