Maybe playing with fire?

Featured Replies

I decided that my car needed some TLC as its just clocked 165k with only the radiator needing changeing above normal service parts so my shopping list was

Poly Bushes all round

Cam Belt

Water Pump

Clutch and dual mass Flywheel

Braided Hoses

5.1 brake fluid

full oil and filter change

coolant flush

rear brake pads

drop links

dog bone mount

fuel filter

total bill for parts approx £1k

labour £300 (from one very good friend)

Now I really wanted a Sach uprated clutch but at over £800 it was alot of money so I shopped around and found that for around £550 i could get a std Sach clutch and Dual mass but I had all ready seen Techniclutch offering there fast road clutch and solid mass flywheel but they do have mixed reviews accross the web all though they do have 100% feedback so i was in two minds what to do. I was talking to one of my good mates about my options and i mentioned Techniclutch at which point he said thats the one i have in my mondeo ST 2.5 V6 (my old car). This made me allot happier as I know how hard he drives his car the poor thing is thrashed with in an inch of its life from the second he gets in it. One thing that has never let him down is the fast road clutch he has put in and after driveing it i know how it feels it has a nice strong feel to the pedal and was easy to drive in traffic.

I know its not the same car but this helped me make my decision so i did a deal with Techniclutch £500 next day delivery for there fast road clutch and Sach dual mass flywheel i was a little worried as to what i was going to actually get but when it arrived it was a Sach Clutch and Sach Dual Mass with all fitting parts inc what they seem to do is swap out some of the std parts for uprated ones i have no problem with this as i now know its a good quality OE clutch they have modded to help it cope with a little more abuse.

One thing i wasnt expecting is how bloody heavy the Dual Mass is my god there is some weight in that must be well over 20kg.

Im fitting the above next week so i will keep you posted and update with pics as i go along.

Time will tell that and my right foot putting 182bhp and 302 ft-lb through it lol

Hmm either that or its a standard clutch...

So basically they rip sachs off? Kindov like those ferrari bodykitted mr2's???

its def Sach boxed in Sach box metal stamped Sach either way it is cheaper than a OE which lasted 165k miles worse case its OE spec or best case it can handle more power either way its all good IMO

you dont really need braided hoses, the fronts are already braided on the vrs, and the rears only replace a very small pipe each side on the rear axle, not really worth it, the brake fluid is deffo worth it though

fabric braided not steel braided im told

Any pics of the clutch ?

Cant wait to hear to reports on this if it is all sachs oem kit then this could save people £££'s

i will post pics of it tomorrow not at home until then.

Like my dad said someone always has to be the first and as im no sheep i thought what the hell i will give it a go im sure somewhere down the line someone had to take the plunge and try a Sach clutch now its a must have maybe this is a good alternative for people with just a remap.

looks a very similar design i know it wont be as strong but my funds would not stretch another £700 on top of what i have paid if it can cope with the 302 ft-lb i have now i will be very happy when its time to upgrade the turbo i will look at doing a sachs fast road clutch if needed then but the dual mass hasnt been changed for 165k so that needed doing anyway.

I will keep you posted

has anyone got a pic of a std one? that comes in the fabia

Heres a bit of sex wee

helix003.jpg

I have a funny combo in my fabia at the moment. The sachs clutch from jase above, and a jabbasport single mass flywheel I got used pmsl.

Matt

From the pics, I still don't understand what you think is "uprated" about it. That's clearly a standard clutch cover (you can see through the red paint it's only marked SACHS, not SACHS RACE ENGINEERING), and the same with the friction plate which is a different design from the race one.

IMO, it looks like what I've read about Techniclutch is possibly true, and they really do just sell reconditioned and/or painted OEM parts.

edit - the above isn't a dig btw, I'm genuinely interested. I went for Sachs on my old car because I could find very few good words about Techniclutch, but I'm happy to be proved wrong, particularly if it possibly helps save my hard-earned cash in future :)

Day 1 over water and oil drained built up the poly bush press and engine hoist striped loads of parts off the engine so I have enough access to the hoist point oh and fitted the rear upper strut brace.

My mate who is helping me owns his own tuneing company he specialises in tuneing Focus ST/RS to high levels he looked over the clutch and in his own words "This is a nice bit of kit" I asked him if there was any chance it was just a refurbed one and he said not a chance.

This should be going in tomorrow

Would be nice if the company stated exactly which parts they have changed... The benefits and torque handling

When I emailed them prior to ordering I asked what ft-lb it could Handel with out saying what I was running the reply was 325 ft-lb

Well that is a mildly uprated figure, if the PD130 uses the same OEM clutch as the PD150 (which it may do for cost purposes since the engine and gearbox are basically the same), it's good for about 300lb/ft, give or take. My PD150 OEM clutch did 100k standard and then around 7k mapped.

As Jase says though, more details from them would be nice. Or maybe what made your mate so sure it wasn't just refurbed? I still don't really see what there is to "uprate" as you buy the kit with only two parts. Only thing I can really think of is that they remove the Sachs friction material and put their own on, cos that cover looks the same as OEM to me (apart from being red), and the design of the friction plate itself looks the same as OEM to me (i.e. it's more "voided" than the uprated plate someone posted a picture of above).

25 ft-lb is 25 ft-lb any increase is going to be better than the OE one IF this clutch can cope with my power it will be perfect for people who don't plan on going further than just a remap.

And 2 things with regards it being reconed first is it is sold as an unused brand new clutch kit if it was any thing other than this he would have to state it on eBay and second my mate has worked for fiat for many years in which time he created a MK2 punto running 500bhp then he spent 3 years working for a ford tuners before starting of on his own tuning cars so with all that in mind I'm quit sure he would know a reconed clutch when he saw one he does this sort of thing for a living and has uprated people's clutches in there ST and RS many times Inc helix and Sachs so he has seen them all over the years and he wouldn't hold back from telling me his opinion if he didn't think it was anygood.

Once the OE clutch is out I will take pics of them both side by side to compare all parts

Yeah, cos no one would ever misrepresent anything they sell on eBay to make a quick buck...I wouldn't put too much faith in that tbh. And how your mate can tell the quality of the friction material just by looking at it (which I guess is all he's done since it's not fitted yet?) is beyond me. I'm going to come out and say that while I applaud you for buying one, and it's useful that someone has, it just sounds like a fair old load of nonsense to me and I think that unless you genuinely plan to just stay with the remap you have and not uprate your turbo etc if it fails long term, you've probably wasted 500 notes.

So why would they offer a 40k mile 2 year warranty on all parts ? And it was £500 Inc a new Sachs dual mass flywheel and OE slave cylinder and all new Sachs fittings and as the dual mass did need changing anyway I don't see how it's been wasted money.

With all the other parts I needed to change I couldn't stretch to a Sachs updated clutch nor could I wait and save up for it as it was slipping.

And how the hell would they refurb a clutch friction plate I mean come on that would be like refurbing a brake pad it is clearly brand new!!!!

When I said I was going with celtic tuning for my remap people advised me not to as it wasn't one of the tuners everyone HAS to use on here to fit it in and every one said my turbo would go pop well 25k miles later a trip to the nurburgring and 2 rolling road days and would you know it it's still running a dream and it past the smoke test for the MOT which again every said it wouldn't because I wasn't a sheep and didn't follow others.

I have the balls to try different things if I have made the wrong dicision then that is down to me and my pocket will feel it. I do want more power but I will have to wait awhile or that once that is done if the clutch can't Handel the power then I will replace it with a Sachs if needed but time will tell.

Shrug. It's your money mate, as I said I'm not bothered about "fitting in", but I do like to buy tried and tested products. I'm a big believer in "buy cheap, buy twice" is all, in many walks of life and not just on my car. If it works then that's great, but so far the lack of hard evidence and your pics just reinforces what I've already seen when I looked up Techniclutch before, which is that many people have said that they basically just got OEM parts.

As for why they'd offer a warranty, maybe they're banking on the law of averages, and for every OEM clutch they sell that slips at 325ft/lb, they sell ten that don't. Plus with dyno lotteries etc, you might be running less torque than you think so people who think they're running 325 could actually be running down to 300 and be within OEM spec anyway. But that's me being a bit of a conspiracist now.
