Just had a diagnostic check as the engine management light was on and the fault is pointing to the air mass sensor. Is changing this as straight forward as it looks, i.e. undo one, take it out, put the new one in and reconnect, or is there anything I should watch for, or do aswell. Also, would this cause poor fuel consumption? The car runs fine, but only returns low 20's mpg round town, and the exhaust does look a little black inside.

Ah, one other thing, would you trust a pattern sensor or always go for the OEM, only the price seems to vary so much. And if its a pattern one, which is best?

Always go OEM as the pattern parts fail, they are an exchange item so you will have to give them the old one, you could change it in the car park they are that easy to do. It would also explain your poor MPG

You might want to rule out a boost leak as this can sometimes show a code for the MAF.

Yup like on mine, My engine VAg reader has been stuffing up rubbish about the MAF and rpm too high and alot more about the MAF.... yet i found a split pipe :),

check the pipes first as theres a possibility of it saving you some cash
