New front discs and pads

Featured Replies

Just been quoted 220 for new front discs and pads fitted, all vag parts. Anyone know if this is a bit dear?

I want to shop around for the parts to get them cheaper but can't find anywhere online that will do vag discs and pads. I tried vwspares but they are not oem. Anyone know anywhere? Also anyone know the part numbers? Car is 2006 petrol vrs mk2

Also I've only done 17000 miles, should they need changing? How can I check myself?

Many thanks

I get my parts from TPS. My discs have done 45,000 miles and are still only half worn! Unless you are a heavy braker then they should be fine for quite a few thousand miles. I got my car Feb 2010 and a have covered 27,000 miles since then and Im still on the same pads and they have plenty of thickness on them for a few more thousand.

The only way of checking is to remove the wheel and visually check the pads and get a micrometer to measure the disc thickness. The minimum thickness is usually stamped on the edge of the disc or near to the hub.

He said the discs are heavily corroded and the car has been left for 4 months so could that be it. He also said he would recommend doing the pads at the the same time.....

That sounds like a surprisingly decent price actually, parts alone would probably be around 100. Defo worth getting pads done while everything has been stripped down. There's no way the discs will be worn after 17k but after 5yrs and lots of time standing could easily be corroded enough to warrant changing.

It is true that you should always replace the pads if you replace the discs. As the disc wears / corrodes it changes shape, naturally the pad wears to this shape. Running an old pad on a new disc can at best result in damage to the new disc at worst your braking performance will be reduced.

It is also worth noting that there is a good chance that the OEM discs and pads will be stock items from a well known brand such as Ferodo or EBC etc. so you may well be able to get the same level of quality parts from a local motor factors for less money than a Skoda dealer.

There are a few threads on here about the perceived quality of OEM Skoda discs and how quickly they corrode. Quite a few members have complained at how soon they have had to replace them.

Just a thought but maybe OEM isn't always the best option...

Price breaks down to 160 parts 60 labour. Happy with the labour just wanted to check the parts......

Yes this is a 5 year old car with 17000 miles so has done a lot of sitting around. Bought it less than a year ago with 12k on it.

Also can anyone recommend any other discs/ pads?

20% off when you spend over £30.

Free delivery.

15% off brake discs and pads...

Front discs from £35, pads from £29 before any of the above discounts...

I used to work in the motor factors for 9 years, the only advice i would give is stay well clear of the cheap brands as they never last as long as the branded stuff. im not saying the branded stuff dont go wrong but less chance of doing so. I liked mintex pads and lucas discs but thats just my opinion.

Lookin at ebc green stuff pads ( green calipers :) ) with grooved/ drilled discs although I don't know what the benefits of grooved and drilled are????

Any good?

our genuine front disks and pads are £120 inc the vat which i dont suppose is out the way

I'd be careful with the green stuff - been various reports of warping and such. Do a little research on them first, the situation might have changed by now.

The pattern part stuff is very good thanks to ECE R90 regulation that ensures brakes behave within 8% of the OEM equipment. For what it's worth I've had the Delphi front disc and pads on my car for over a year now and work very well indeed.

Genuine vag? U have a website?

The price sounds really good but why do they need changing? if just corroded a few stops will clear it. Sounds like the garage is short if work!

Max or Standard?

Doesn't look as though you can get the max ones for the vRS.

Max or Standard?

Still deciding. Anyone know if the MAX are worth the extra dosh??

They appear to be for the non-turbo fsi, only 288mm dia. VRS discs should be 312mm.

Correct. It's a shame because they look quite good, might be worth a call to see if they do sell em.

With brakes and for normal road driving I'd just stick with the normal brembo discs. They were fitted to my Focus RS as standard and gave excellent braking! Yes the brakes were better than the Octy as they had 4 pot brembos fitted but they would easily shrug of 100mph in 4 seconds!. Yes I tried it the once and my eyes almost popped out lol. All this drilled and grooved malarky is for track day cars. Jabbasport recommended a normal disc and performance pad setup for a road car but the Brembo pads will be more than up to the job!
